Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the victim to open an attacker-crafted PDF in Soda PDF Desktop (build 14.0.509.23030 per the CPE) or visit a malicious page that serves such a file - the flaw is in the application's PDF file-parsing path and triggers an out-of-bounds read when user-supplied PDF data is not properly validated. Limiting factors that reduce real-world risk: mandatory user interaction (UI:R - the target must actively open the malicious file), a local attack vector (AV:L - no remote network service is exposed), and the fact that this yields only an information leak (C:H, I:N, A:N) unless chained with a separate memory-corruption bug to achieve code execution.

Impact

This is a genuinely moderate, not high-priority, issue and the signals are largely consistent. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N, base 5.5) describes a local-vector, user-interaction-dependent information-disclosure flaw with high confidentiality impact but no integrity or availability impact - appropriate for an out-of-bounds read (CWE-125) triggered by opening a malicious PDF. Note a wording tension to verify: the NVD description states 'remote attackers' while the CVSS vector is AV:L; this is the standard ZDI file-parsing convention (the vector is 'local' because the victim must open an attacker-supplied file locally, even though the file is delivered remotely), not a true remote-network vector, so treat it as attacker-supplies-file/local-trigger. Exploitation likelihood is low: EPSS is 0.18% (7th percentile), the CVE is not on CISA KEV, and no public exploit was identified in the provided data - no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The 'RCE' and 'Buffer Overflow' tags overstate the standalone impact: by itself this is an info-disclosure (memory read), and arbitrary code execution is only possible 'in conjunction with other vulnerabilities' per the description. Overall: a legitimate but low-urgency client-side bug whose main value to an attacker is as an info-leak primitive (e.g., ASLR defeat) in a larger exploit chain, not a standalone widespread threat.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker crafts a malicious PDF and lures a Soda PDF Desktop user into opening it (via email attachment, download, or a malicious web page). When Soda PDF parses the malformed file, the flaw causes a read past the end of an allocated object, leaking adjacent process memory back to data the attacker can observe or chain. No public proof-of-concept was identified at time of analysis, and the high confidentiality / no-availability impact plus required user interaction make this most useful as an information-leak step within a broader exploit chain rather than a standalone compromise.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 19, 2026

An out-of-bounds read in Soda PDF Desktop's PDF parsing engine (build 14.0.509.23030) lets an attacker craft a malicious PDF that leaks process memory contents when the victim opens it, requiring user interaction and local execution context. The impact is limited to information disclosure (confidentiality high, no integrity or availability effect) unless the leak is chained with a separate memory-corruption bug to achieve code execution; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, EPSS is low at roughly 0.18% (7th percentile), and the issue is not confirmed actively exploited (CISA KEV).

RemediationAI

No vendor-released patch is identified in the provided data at time of analysis, so confirm fixed-build availability directly with Soda PDF and track ZDI-25-1084 (https://www.zerodayinitiative.com/advisories/ZDI-25-1084/) for the patched version before upgrading. Until a fix is published, treat all untrusted PDFs as hostile: block PDF attachments at the mail and web gateway and require users to open them only in a hardened alternative viewer, recognizing that this bypasses Soda PDF workflows; disable JavaScript and any auto-open/trusted-content features in Soda PDF to shrink the parser attack surface, at the cost of breaking interactive forms; run Soda PDF as a low-privilege user inside a sandbox, AppContainer, or disposable VM so a successful memory leak exposes minimal process data, accepting reduced usability and performance; and restrict inbound delivery of PDFs from unknown external sources, understanding that this is a policy control rather than a technical fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is a classic CWE-125 out-of-bounds read inside Soda PDF Desktop's PDF document parser. When parsing attacker-supplied PDF structures, the application fails to validate length or offset data against the bounds of the allocated buffer, so a read can walk past the end of the object and return adjacent heap memory into the rendered or returned output. The CVSS vector CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N confirms a local attack vector with no privileges required (PR:N) but mandatory user interaction (UI:R) - the victim must open the crafted PDF or visit a page that serves it - and a scope-unchanged impact confined to confidentiality. Because only a read primitive is provided, standalone exploitation yields memory disclosure (potentially pointers, ASLR-relevant addresses, or other process data); converting it into code execution requires pairing it with a second, independent memory-corruption vulnerability, which is why the ZDI tags mention RCE and buffer overflow while the assessed impact remains information disclosure.

DescriptionNVD

Soda PDF Desktop PDF File Parsing Out-Of-Bounds Read Information Disclosure Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to disclose sensitive information on affected installations of Soda PDF Desktop. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file.

The specific flaw exists within the parsing of PDF files. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of user-supplied data, which can result in a read past the end of an allocated object. An attacker can leverage this in conjunction with other vulnerabilities to execute arbitrary code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-27140.

Attack Technique

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.

Information disclosure occurs when an application unintentionally exposes sensitive data that aids attackers in reconnaissance or directly compromises security.

Remote Code Execution represents the critical moment when an attacker successfully runs arbitrary code on a target system without physical access.
