Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires network reachability to the Windows DNS Server service (the DNS Server role must be installed and running, as on Active Directory domain controllers or standalone DNS servers), which is its default operating mode. Per the CVSS vector (PR:N/UI:N/AC:L), no authentication, no user interaction, and no special configuration are needed - an attacker who can send DNS traffic to the listener can trigger the out-of-bounds read. Limiting factors: the target host must actually run the DNS Server role and be network-reachable from the attacker (internet-exposed DNS resolvers/servers are most at risk; internal-only DNS reduces exposure), and the host must be unpatched below the fixed builds (e.g., Server 2025 <10.0.26100.33650, Server 2022 <10.0.20348.5761, Server 2019 <10.0.17763.9376). Impact is confined to service disruption; no code execution, data read, or integrity loss results.

Impact

This is a network-reachable, unauthenticated denial-of-service vulnerability in Windows DNS Server, consistent across signals as a moderate-severity availability issue rather than a top-tier emergency. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, 7.5) indicates an attacker can reach the service over the network with no authentication, no user interaction, and low complexity, but impact is limited strictly to availability (C:N/I:N) - an out-of-bounds read (CWE-125) crashing or hanging the DNS service. CISA's SSVC framework reinforces a measured priority: Exploitation is rated 'none' (no observed or public exploitation), Automatable is 'yes' (the attack can be scripted and sprayed), and Technical Impact is 'partial' - together suggesting a DoS that could be launched at scale but does not grant code execution or data access. There is no KEV listing and no POC reported, and no EPSS score was supplied, so exploitation likelihood cannot be quantified from the input. Note a tag conflict: the input tags 'Information Disclosure,' yet the CVSS vector sets C:N - an out-of-bounds READ often leaks memory, but the authoritative vector and description both scope impact to denial of service only, so treat 'information disclosure' as unsupported by the official data. Net: a real but routine patch-cycle priority for DNS-serving Windows environments, elevated by its network/unauthenticated reach and automatability, tempered by availability-only impact and no evidence of exploitation.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A remote, unauthenticated attacker sends a specially crafted DNS query or response to a vulnerable Windows DNS Server, triggering an out-of-bounds read that crashes or destabilizes the service and disrupts name resolution for dependent clients. Because the flaw is low-complexity and marked automatable by SSVC, an attacker could script repeated requests to keep the service down. No public exploit code or active exploitation has been identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026

Denial of service in Windows DNS Server: an unauthenticated, network-reachable attacker can send crafted DNS traffic to a host running the DNS Server role and trigger an out-of-bounds read (CWE-125) that disrupts or crashes the service, scored CVSS 7.5 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N, availability impact only). Unpatched Windows Server 2012, 2012 R2, 2016, 2019, 2022 and 2025 installations are affected, with Active Directory domain controllers and internet-facing resolvers carrying the greatest exposure because the DNS role must be listening by default; there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and CISA's SSVC assessment records exploitation as 'none' with partial technical impact. Microsoft has released fixes through the MSRC update guide, and the impact is confined to service disruption with no code execution or data disclosure resulting.

RemediationAI

Patch available per vendor advisory: apply the Microsoft security update referenced in the MSRC update guide (https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2026-83635) to bring each host to or above the fixed builds published with the advisory - the affected ranges end at 6.2.9200.26434 (Server 2012), 6.3.9600.23470 (Server 2012 R2), 10.0.14393.9612 (Server 2016), 10.0.17763.9376 (Server 2019), 10.0.20348.5761 (Server 2022) and 10.0.26100.33650 (Server 2025), so systems at or above those builds are remediated. Because the vulnerable path requires only network reachability to port 53 with no authentication, the most effective compensating control before patching is to shrink that reachability: block inbound TCP and UDP 53 from the internet and from untrusted network segments at the perimeter or host firewall, allowing only known resolver clients - the trade-off is that off-network clients lose name resolution until they are re-routed through a permitted resolver or VPN. Where an exposed host acts as an open or unrestricted recursive resolver, disable recursion (or restrict it to internal clients) to cut the attack surface, accepting that external query resolution for those clients will fail until they are pointed at an alternative resolver. On Active Directory domain controllers the DNS Server role cannot simply be removed because AD DS depends on it, so firewall scoping plus priority patching is the realistic option there; reducing the number of DNS stubs and forwarders exposed to untrusted networks also limits the number of reachable entry points until maintenance windows allow the update to be deployed.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The vulnerability is a CWE-125 out-of-bounds read in the DNS Server role included with Windows Server (the service behind the 'DNS Server' feature/role, also present on Active Directory domain controllers and standalone resolvers). The flaw arises in the processing of DNS messages arriving over the network listener (TCP/UDP port 53); a malformed or specially crafted packet causes the parser to read memory beyond the bounds of a buffer rather than handling the length/offset field safely. Because the CVSS vector is AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N, the vulnerable code path is reachable without credentials, without user interaction and without non-default configuration, so any client able to send DNS traffic to the listener can attempt it; prerequisites are limited to the DNS Server role being installed, running and network-reachable. Underlying products per the EUVD version data are the Windows Server 2012/2012 R2 (6.2.9200.0 and 6.3.9600.0 branch), Windows Server 2016 (10.0.14393.0), Windows Server 2019 (10.0.17763.0), Windows Server 2022 (10.0.20348.0) and Windows Server 2025 (10.0.26100.0) codebases, each including Server Core installation variants. The information-disclosure tag attached to the record is typical of out-of-bounds reads at the class level, but the assessed impact here is availability-only (C:N/I:N/A:H) - the observable effect is a terminated or unresponsive DNS service, not retrieved memory contents or code execution.

DescriptionCVE.org

Out-of-bounds read in DNS Server allows an unauthorized attacker to deny service over a network.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A denial-of-service vulnerability in the Windows DNS Server role affects unpatched Windows Server 2012, 2012 R2, 2016, 2019, 2022, and 2025 systems, allowing an unauthenticated network attacker to crash or disrupt DNS service. Because Active Directory domain controllers and internet-facing resolvers run this role by default, an outage could cascade into failed logins, broken application authentication, and widespread name-resolution failures across the enterprise. The risk is availability-only - no code execution or data disclosure has been demonstrated - so leadership should treat this as a resilience and uptime issue with the highest priority placed on domain controllers and externally reachable DNS hosts.

Attack Technique

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.

Information disclosure occurs when an application unintentionally exposes sensitive data that aids attackers in reconnaissance or directly compromises security.
