Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the victim's FreeRDP client (versions 3.9.0 through 3.31.x) to initiate an RDP connection to a server the attacker controls or has compromised, and that session must reach the RDPEAR (Kerberos remote credential) NDR exchange - specifically the client must process a CreateApReqAuthenticatorReq message. The concrete trigger is a KERB_RPC_INTERNAL_NAME structure with NameCount of two or more whose buffer is truncated before the Names pointer, causing the NDR reader's cleanup path to dereference a null base. Limiting factors that reduce real-world risk: the attack is client-side and reversed (the victim must be lured into connecting to a malicious/untrusted server rather than the attacker reaching the client directly), user interaction is required to establish the session (UI:P), and the impact is limited to crashing the client with no confidentiality or integrity consequence. Clients that only connect to trusted internal RDP servers are at substantially lower risk.

Impact

This is a client-side denial-of-service (NULL pointer dereference, CWE-476) with a moderate CVSS 4.0 base score of 6.0. The vendor-supplied 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:N/UI:P/VC:N/VI:N/VA:H) tells a consistent story: although the attack vector is network-based, exploitation is gated by high attack complexity (AC:H), a present attack requirement (AT:P), and required user interaction (UI:P) - the victim must be induced to connect their FreeRDP client to an attacker-controlled or compromised RDP server. Impact is confined to availability (VA:H, client crash/termination) with zero confidentiality or integrity impact and no scope change to other systems, so this cannot lead to code execution or data loss on the evidence provided. On the real-world-risk signals: there is no CISA KEV listing and no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and no EPSS probability was supplied - absence of these is not itself evidence of safety but means there is no indication of active or widespread exploitation. Net assessment: a genuine but lower-priority issue. It is not a high-CVSS-but-illusory risk (the crash is real and remotely triggerable), yet the reversed direction of attack (client must initiate the connection to a malicious server) and availability-only impact place it well below network-facing unauthenticated RCE or server-side DoS flaws. Patch on a normal cadence; prioritize hosts that routinely connect to untrusted or externally-hosted RDP endpoints.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker stands up or compromises an RDP server and lures a victim to connect with a vulnerable FreeRDP client (3.9.0 up to but not including 3.32.0). During the RDPEAR Kerberos exchange the malicious server returns a CreateApReqAuthenticatorReq whose KERB_RPC_INTERNAL_NAME is truncated - NameCount is two or more but the buffer ends before the Names pointer - so cleanup dereferences a null base and terminates the client. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, and the attack yields only a crash, not control of the client.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 12, 2026

Denial of service in FreeRDP client versions 3.9.0 through 3.31.x (all releases before 3.32.0) lets a malicious or compromised RDP server crash the connecting client by sending a CreateApReqAuthenticatorReq containing a truncated KERB_RPC_INTERNAL_NAME structure, which drives the RDPEAR NDR reader's cleanup path into a NULL pointer dereference (CWE-476). Exploitation is client-side and inverted: an unauthenticated remote attacker must lure a victim into initiating an RDP session against a server they control and that session must reach the RDPEAR Kerberos remote-credential exchange, so user interaction is required and the outcome is limited to a client crash with no confidentiality or integrity loss (CVSS 4.0 base 6.0). No public exploit code and no confirmed active exploitation were identified at time of analysis, and clients that only connect to trusted internal RDP servers are at substantially lower risk.

RemediationAI

Upgrade FreeRDP to 3.32.0 or later, the first release outside the affected 3.9.0-3.31.x range, following the vendor advisory GHSA-93g7-296p-j77j (https://github.com/FreeRDP/FreeRDP/security/advisories/GHSA-93g7-296p-j77j) and the VulnCheck advisory (https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/freerdp-from-3.9.0-before-3.32.0-rdpear-null-pointer-dereference-via-kerb-rpc-internal-name); because FreeRDP is commonly vendored, inventories should be re-scanned to catch bundled copies inside third-party clients and appliances, and distributions that backport fixes rather than bump versions should be verified against the advisory rather than the version string alone. Where immediate upgrade is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to constrain the client so it only initiates RDP sessions against trusted, authenticated infrastructure - the attack requires the victim to connect outward to an attacker-controlled server and then reach the RDPEAR credential exchange, so blocking or filtering outbound RDP (TCP 3389 and any custom RDP ports) to untrusted networks removes the trigger, with the trade-off that legitimate remote access to non-internal hosts breaks. Organizations that do not use Kerberos credential delegation through RDP can disable or avoid the RDPEAR/remote-credential code path in their client configuration or build, eliminating the vulnerable parser at the cost of losing single sign-on style credential forwarding for RDP. Monitoring can also be considered a detection rather than prevention measure: repeated FreeRDP client crashes immediately after connecting to a particular server are a strong indicator of this trigger, and such endpoints should be blocked. No vendor-released patch version other than 3.32.0 is identified in the available data, and no public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was observed at time of analysis.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The vulnerability sits in FreeRDP's RDPEAR (Remote Credential / enhanced authentication redirection) handling, the Kerberos-based credential delegation path used during RDP authentication, and specifically in the NDR (Network Data Representation) reader that decodes KERB_RPC_INTERNAL_NAME structures carried inside a CreateApReqAuthenticatorReq message. NDR encodes counted arrays as a NameCount field plus a Names pointer that must be fully present in the received buffer; when the attacker truncates the buffer so the array terminates before the Names pointer, the reader's cleanup/free routine operates on an unset base pointer and dereferences NULL, aborting the client process. The root cause class is CWE-476 (NULL Pointer Dereference), a memory-safety defect rather than a logic error, and the CVSS 4.0 vector CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:N/UI:P/VC:N/VI:N/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N confirms network reachability, high attack complexity, no privileges required, required user interaction (the victim must connect), and a high availability-only impact confined to the vulnerable component. The affected-product CPE is the version-unconstrained wildcard cpe:2.3:a:freerdp:freerdp:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, and the associated tags are Denial Of Service, Null Pointer Dereference, and Freerdp; because FreeRDP is embedded in numerous RDP clients, wrappers, and appliances, the practical exposure extends to any downstream product built on the affected 3.9.0-3.31.x codebase.

DescriptionCVE.org

FreeRDP from 3.9.0 before 3.32.0 contains a NULL pointer dereference vulnerability in the RDPEAR NDR reader that allows malicious servers to crash clients via truncated KERB_RPC_INTERNAL_NAME data. Attackers can send a CreateApReqAuthenticatorReq with NameCount of two or more ending before the Names pointer, causing cleanup to dereference a null base and terminate the client.
