| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires an authenticated account on the Databasement instance (PR:L) with the ability to create or edit a database-server backup configuration and supply attacker-controlled dump arguments (the patched 'dump_flags' field, or per the description a database name). The attacker must inject a path-redirecting client option - e.g. mariadb-dump --result-file / -r, --tab, pg_dump --file, mongodump --out, redis-cli --rdb/--eval - and the chosen output path must be web-accessible (e.g. /app/public) and interpretable as code (PHP) for RCE. Limiting factors: valid authentication is needed (not unauthenticated); the flaw applies to engines whose dump command appends extra flags (SQLite is excluded per the fix comment); and achieving code execution specifically depends on writing into a web-served, PHP-executing directory rather than merely writing an arbitrary file. |
| Impact | Signals are moderately strong but not top-tier-emergency. The provided CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N, C:H/I:H/A:H, score 8.8 HIGH) describes a network-reachable, low-complexity flaw needing only low privileges (PR:L = an authenticated user) and no user interaction, yielding full confidentiality/integrity/availability impact via RCE - consistent with CWE-88 argument injection. A public exploit exists (GHSA-hm57-pvxc-4pcm, marked 'exploit' in references), which raises practical risk above a theoretical bug. However, this is NOT confirmed actively exploited: it is absent from CISA KEV in the provided data. No EPSS score was supplied, so widespread-exploitation probability cannot be quantified - EPSS data is MISSING. The dominant risk-limiter is deployment footprint: 'databasement' is an obscure self-hosted project (the description itself notes it is not even published as an independent Composer package), so despite the high CVSS this is far more a targeted/opportunistic risk against the few exposed instances than a mass-exploitation priority. Note a data inconsistency: the description attributes the write primitive to an attacker-controlled 'database name' (--result-file example), while the referenced fix commits validate the 'dump_flags' input via a new SafeDumpFlags rule - verify the exact injectable parameter against the vendor advisory. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An authenticated low-privilege user of a Databasement instance configures a database backup and injects a dump argument such as --result-file=/app/public/index.php (argument injection into mariadb-dump); because the file lands in the web-accessible directory, the attacker then requests it to execute attacker-supplied PHP, achieving remote code execution. Shell quoting does not help because the option is interpreted by the dump client, not the shell. A public proof-of-concept/advisory exists, so the technique is documented and reproducible. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 11, 2026
Databasement instances before 1.8.2 allow an authenticated user to achieve remote code execution by injecting path-redirecting client options (such as mariadb-dump --result-file, -r, --tab, pg_dump --file, mongodump --out, or redis-cli --rdb/--eval) into the arguments passed to the backup dump binary. Shell quoting prevents classic OS command injection, but argument injection alone is sufficient: by directing the dump output to a web-served, PHP-executing path such as /app/public/index.php, the attacker writes code that the web server later executes. Authentication is required (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, base 8.8), publicly available exploit code exists, and success depends on the chosen output path being both web-accessible and interpretable as code; no evidence of confirmed active exploitation was provided.
RemediationAI
Upgrade Databasement to 1.8.2 or later (vendor-released patch fixing CVE-2026-108963); if tracking the source directly, apply upstream commits 2d2761905594a2fa2c3d81d48a7c8b6a1784862c and 22258e3eac594e653f9d04a69d93e83923d61499, and consult the advisory at https://github.com/David-Crty/databasement/security/advisories/GHSA-hm57-pvxc-4pcm. Verification after upgrading: confirm the SafeDumpFlags rule is present and that dump_flags entries naming --result-file/-r, --tab/-T, --file/-f, --out/-o, --rdb, --eval, /targetfile or similar are rejected. Compensating controls if an upgrade cannot be performed immediately: restrict the ability to create or edit database-server backup configurations to fully trusted administrators (removes the PR:L foothold but does not protect against an already-privileged insider); remove or deny all dump_flags input at the reverse proxy or by code patch, accepting that legitimate custom dump options will stop working; disable backup jobs for the affected engines (MySQL/MariaDB, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis, MSSQL) while keeping SQLite, with the trade-off of losing scheduled backups; and ensure the application's public web root (for example /app/public) is not writable by the user running the PHP process, which breaks the specific file-write-to-code-execution chain without blocking other argument-injection outcomes such as overwriting arbitrary files. Because publicly available exploit code exists and the attack is remote and authenticated, prioritize patching instances where multiple users can log in and manage backup configurations.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The vulnerability is CWE-88 (Improper Neutralization of Argument Delimiters in a Command, i.e. argument/option injection) affecting Databasement, a PHP/Laravel application that schedules database backups by shelling out to native dump clients. Because the application correctly quotes individual tokens before invoking the shell, an attacker cannot break out of the command with metacharacters; however, the dump clients themselves interpret tokens beginning with -- (or -) as options. Options that name an output destination - mariadb-dump's --result-file/-r and --tab/-T, pg_dump's --file/-f, mongodump's --out/-o and --archive, redis-cli's --rdb/--functions-rdb and --eval, and sqlpackage's /targetfile and /profile - let the caller choose where the dump is written rather than the destination the application intended. Other denied options (--defaults-file, --config, --plugin-dir, --profile) load options or client-side code from an attacker-controlled path. Before the fix, the dump_flags field was constrained only by a permissive character allowlist regex (/^[a-zA-Z0-9\s\-\_\.\/\,\:\*\?\%\+\@]+$/), which permits '-', '=' and '/' and therefore admits these option names. The remediation adds an App\Rules\SafeDumpFlags validation rule with a per-engine denylist (MySQL/MariaDB, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis, MSSQL), because each client reads its own flags - '-r' is --result-file to mariadb-dump but a repeat count to redis-cli, and '-f' is --file to pg_dump but --force to mariadb-dump. The tokenizer and violation check are also reused by App\Services\Backup\DTO\DatabaseOperationResult::escapeFlags() as a last line of defence for configurations stored before a flag was denied. SQLite is excluded from the appended-flags path. Notably, the project's composer.json does not declare an independently published databasement Composer package, so Composer-based dependency scanners may not flag affected installs.

2DescriptionCVE.org
databasement before 1.8.2 allows remote code execution because it runs certain commands (e.g., mariadb-dump) with a database name that can be specified by any authenticated user. For example, --result-file=/app/public/index.php can write to index.php. In other words, quoting prevents OS command injection in mariadb-dump, but the argument injection alone is sufficient for code execution indirectly. NOTE: the project's composer.json file does not indicate an independently published databasement Composer package.

Executive ViewAI
Databasement versions prior to 1.8.2 are vulnerable to authenticated remote code execution, allowing any user with a valid account to write arbitrary code to web-accessible paths and potentially take full control of the server. Publicly available exploit code exists, and no vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis, raising the risk of data breach, service disruption, and lateral movement. Leadership should prioritize immediate mitigation and monitor for a vendor fix.
Restrict authenticated access to trusted users only; disable backup functionality or limit backup destinations to non-web-accessible, non-executable paths; run Databasement with a low-privilege service account and read-only filesystem where possible; monitor logs for suspicious backup commands and file writes to web directories; deploy WAF rules to detect argument injection patterns.
