MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Discovery, Collection The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated high-privilege account (PR:H) able to invoke the restore operation on the database-servers API endpoint (app/Http/Requests/Api/V1/RestoreRequest.php). The traversal is triggered by the schema_name argument during a restore for database types whose name is written directly to a filesystem path (SQLite and Firebird, per the patch, which added SafeDatabasePath checks to those DatabaseType rules). Limiting factors: exploitation is network-reachable but rated difficult/high-complexity (AC:H), demands prior privileged authentication, and only affects databasement versions up to 1.7.1 (fixed in 1.7.2); impact is limited to low confidentiality/integrity/availability with no scope change to other systems. |
| Impact | This is a low-real-risk issue despite being a network-exploitable path traversal. The CVSS 4.0 base score is only 1.2 and all signals converge on low priority: the vendor vector is CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:H/AT:N/PR:H/UI:N with only low vulnerable-system impact (VC:L/VI:L/VA:L) and no scope change. Critically, it requires high privileges (PR:H - an authenticated, high-privilege operator of the restore/database-servers API) AND high attack complexity (AC:H), which the description reinforces ('A high complexity level is associated with this attack. The exploitability is said to be difficult'). The threat intelligence (E:P) and references confirm publicly available exploit code exists (a GitHub security advisory GHSA-x225-463f-pgww), but this is distinct from active exploitation: there is no CISA KEV listing and no EPSS score provided, so there is no evidence of in-the-wild use. The POC lowers the bar to replicate but does not change that the attacker must already hold a privileged, authenticated role on the appliance. No conflicting signals: the CVSS vector (network, high-complexity, high-privilege) is consistent with the description of a privileged restore operation manipulating schema_name. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A high-privilege authenticated user of the databasement API crafts a database restore request to the database-servers endpoint with a malicious schema_name containing traversal sequences (e.g. ../../), causing the restore to write to a file path outside the intended directory. Because a SQLite/Firebird restore writes to the resolved path directly, the manipulated name redirects the write. Public exploit code exists via the vendor's GitHub security advisory, but the attack is rated difficult (AC:H) and requires an existing privileged account (PR:H). |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 01, 2026
Path traversal in David-Crty databasement up to 1.7.1 lets a high-privileged authenticated user escape the intended backup volume by supplying a crafted schema_name to the database-servers restore API endpoint, reaching filesystem locations outside the restore target. The attack is network-reachable but rated high-complexity and difficult to exploit, and its assessed impact is limited to low confidentiality, integrity and availability with no scope change. Publicly available exploit code exists, though there is no confirmed evidence of active exploitation; the issue is fixed in 1.7.2.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to databasement 1.7.2 or later, which is the vendor-released fix (see the release at https://github.com/David-Crty/databasement/releases/tag/v1.7.2 and the patch at https://github.com/David-Crty/databasement/pull/511); this release adds the SafeDatabasePath validation rule that rejects traversal sequences in schema_name for the SQLite and Firebird database types, plus related path, host and endpoint validation and stricter restore authorization. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, restrict access to the database-servers restore API endpoint to trusted, high-privilege administrators only and remove restore privileges from non-essential accounts (trade-off: reduces operational flexibility and requires role auditing), and constrain the application's filesystem access so the process can only write inside the intended backup volume - for example by running databasement in a container with the volume mounted read/write and the rest of the host filesystem read-only or unmounted (trade-off: legitimate restores to alternative paths will fail). Avoid registering SQLite or Firebird entries whose schema names embed directory-separator or dot-dot characters, and monitor API requests for schema_name values containing '../' or absolute paths as a detection layer. Full details are in the vendor advisory GHSA-x225-463f-pgww and the VulDB entry at https://vuldb.com/vuln/412345.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Databasement is a self-hosted PHP/Laravel application (CPE cpe:2.3:a:david-crty:databasement:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) that manages database backups, snapshots and restores. The flaw is CWE-22 (Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory) in app/Http/Requests/Api/V1/RestoreRequest.php, where the schema_name argument supplied to the database-servers API restore operation is used to construct a filesystem path without adequate traversal checks. Per the upstream fix, only database types whose names are written directly to a filesystem path are affected - notably SQLite and Firebird; other engine types use a conservative identifier charset (letters, numbers, underscores) and are not exposed the same way. The patch in PR 511 introduces a dedicated App\Rules\SafeDatabasePath validation rule applied to the SQLITE and FIREBIRD rule sets (with allowBackslashes for Firebird), and additionally adds realpath-based containment checks (isInsideVolume) for local snapshot downloads, SafePath/SafeHost/SafeEndpointUrl validators elsewhere, an authorize('restoreFrom', $snapshot) call on the restore action, and organization-scoped re-resolution of source/target server IDs - indicating a broader input-validation and authorization hardening release rather than a single-line fix. Because the traversal requires a previously authenticated, high-privilege account and the path-write primitive is difficult to steer, the practical severity is low despite the network attack vector.

A vulnerability was found in David-Crty databasement up to 1.7.1. This impacts the function https:/github.com/David-Crty/databasement/pull/511 of the file app/Http/Requests/Api/V1/RestoreRequest.php of the component database-servers API Endpoint. The manipulation of the argument schema_name results in path traversal. The attack may be launched remotely. A high complexity level is associated with this attack. The exploitability is said to be difficult. The exploit has been made public and could be used. Upgrading to version 1.7.2 will fix this issue. You should upgrade the affected component.
