V3 - Web Frontend Security Cache-Control for sensitive pages
|
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires SpeedyCache page caching to be active and the site to accept public comments with the standard WordPress 'remember me' comment cookies, so that returning commenters have comment_author_*/comment_author_email_* cookies that pre-fill the comment form. Exploitation is gated by the vulnerable write path in cache.php/advanced-cache.php caching a page that was rendered for a cookie-bearing returning commenter; the attacker must then request that same public URL before the cache entry is regenerated. Limiting factors: it leaks only the name/email of whichever commenter's personalized render happened to be cached (not an arbitrary user database), depends on a victim first submitting a comment and later triggering a cache-miss write while authenticated via cookies, and the timing/conditions outside the attacker's control account for the AC:H rating. |
| Impact | This is a genuinely low-severity issue despite being remotely reachable, and the available signals are internally consistent rather than conflicting. The CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N, base 3.7) correctly captures the shape of the flaw: network-reachable and unauthenticated (PR:N), but with high attack complexity (AC:H) because successful exploitation depends on a returning commenter first triggering the vulnerable cache write, and limited to a low-confidentiality leak (C:L, no integrity or availability impact). No EPSS score, KEV listing, or SSVC decision data was supplied, and no public exploit code is referenced - only Wordfence's threat-intel entry and the WordPress plugin source/changeset links. There is no active-exploitation signal, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The one subtlety worth flagging: the description explains a real asymmetry (the read path in advanced-cache.php correctly skips cached delivery for requests bearing comment_author_* cookies, but the write path lacks the same guard), which makes the poisoning plausible but still bounded by the AC:H conditions. Net: this is a real but low-priority information-disclosure bug suited to routine patching, not an emergency - no signal elevates it beyond its modest CVSS. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A returning commenter on a SpeedyCache-enabled WordPress site requests a public page while carrying their comment_author_* cookies; the plugin renders the comment form pre-filled with their name and email and, lacking a guard on the write path, persists that personalized HTML as the site-wide cached copy of the page. An unauthenticated attacker then simply requests the same public URL with no cookies and receives the cached page containing the victim's full name and email address. No public exploit code is referenced, and the attack depends on timing the request against a victim-triggered cache write (AC:H). |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 10, 2026
Sensitive information exposure in the SpeedyCache - Cache, Optimization, Performance WordPress plugin through version 1.4.2 allows an unauthenticated attacker to read the full name and email address of returning commenters by fetching a publicly cached page whose personalized comment-form prefill was written into the site-wide cache. The root problem is asymmetric handling of WordPress commenter cookies: advanced-cache.php suppresses cached delivery on the read path for requests carrying comment_author_* / comment_author_email_* cookies, but the equivalent check is missing on the write path in cache.php, so the personalized render is still stored under the public URL and can be retrieved by any cookie-less attacker who requests that same URL before the entry is regenerated. Rated CVSS 3.1 3.7 (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N), it leaks only the identity of whichever commenter's render happened to be cached; no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis and the issue is not listed in CISA KEV.
RemediationAI
Upstream fix available (PR/commit); released patched version not independently confirmed - the fix is carried in the WordPress.org plugin repository changesets 3734609 and 3734608 (trunk/main/cache.php), which add the missing write-path cookie check, and site owners should update SpeedyCache to the first plugin release that includes these changes rather than assuming 1.4.2 remains the current version; verify the installed version via the Plugins screen or WP-CLI and re-check the vendor advisory at https://www.wordfence.com/threat-intel/vulnerabilities/id/c6b8d5ca-34e2-4d25-9185-7fcee790379d?source=cve for the fixed release number. If immediate patching is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to disable SpeedyCache page caching entirely (Settings → SpeedyCache → Cache) until the update is applied, accepting the resulting performance and origin-load penalty, or at minimum exclude comment-bearing URLs (single posts with the comment form enabled) from caching so that per-visitor prefill HTML is never written to the shared cache. Complement this by purging all existing cached pages, since poisoned entries persist until expiry or purge, and by reviewing whether WordPress commenter cookies can be shortened or the 'remember me' commenter data flow disabled, though that degrades legitimate commenter convenience. There is no public exploit code identified at time of analysis, so no network-level blocking rule is warranted; monitoring should instead focus on anomalous cache warm-up patterns where requests originate without comment cookies yet return HTML containing comment_author_email values.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The affected component is SpeedyCache, a WordPress full-page caching and optimization plugin (CPE cpe:2.3:a:softaculous:speedycache_-_cache,_optimization,_performance). WordPress itself sets persistent commenter cookies (comment_author_*, comment_author_email_*, comment_author_url_*) for visitors who submit comments, which WordPress uses to pre-fill the comment form on subsequent visits. Because those values are rendered into the HTML, any page-cache layer must treat a cookie-bearing request as uncacheable. The plugin's drop-in advanced-cache.php at line 108 performs that check on the read side (skipping cached delivery when comment_author_* cookies are present), but the write-side handler in main/cache.php (referenced at lines 91, 151 and 214) does not apply the same condition, so a cache-miss render performed for a cookie-bearing visitor is written to the shared cache under the public URL. This maps to CWE-524 (Use of Cache Containing Sensitive Information): a cache designed to store public, user-independent content is instead used to store per-user personalized data, which is a classic WordPress cache-poisoning/information-disclosure pattern. The problem is exploitable only while SpeedyCache page caching is enabled and the site accepts public comments, and the attacker must hit the affected URL during the cache lifetime established by the victim's own render, which is what drives the high attack-complexity rating (AC:H) rather than any need for authentication (PR:N).

Remotely reachable without auth (AV:N/PR:N), but exploitation hinges on a returning commenter triggering the cache write (AC:H), yielding only a limited name/email disclosure (C:L, I:N, A:N).

DescriptionCVE.org
The SpeedyCache - Cache, Optimization, Performance plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Sensitive Information Exposure in all versions up to, and including, 1.4.2 via the 'comment_author_*, comment_author_email_*' parameter. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to extract the full name and email address of returning commenters pre-filled into comment form input fields and persisted as the site-wide cached page by any unauthenticated attacker requesting the same public URL. The read-side handler in advanced-cache.php correctly skips cached delivery for requests carrying comment_author_* cookies, but this check is absent on the write path, meaning the cache poisoning is invisible to the victim commenter yet fully exploitable by any unauthenticated attacker with no cookies.
