DescriptionCVE.org

Netty is an asynchronous, event-driven network application framework. Prior to 4.1.137.Final and 4.2.17.Final, io.netty.handler.codec.http.cors.CorsHandler setVaryHeader replaces application Vary headers such as Authorization or Cookie with Origin, allowing a caching proxy or CDN to reuse authenticated responses across users and disclose sensitive information. This issue is fixed in versions 4.1.137.Final and 4.2.17.Final.

AnalysisAI

Netty's CorsHandler silently overwrites any application-set Vary headers with only 'Vary: Origin', enabling caching proxies and CDNs to conflate and serve authenticated, user-specific HTTP responses to unauthorized requesters. Affected are all Netty deployments running netty-codec-http prior to 4.1.137.Final or 4.2.17.Final where applications set per-user Vary headers (e.g., Vary: Authorization or Vary: Cookie) and are deployed behind a caching layer. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Three conditions must be simultaneously true for exploitation: (1) the Netty application is configured with io.netty.handler.codec.http.cors.CorsHandler active in its pipeline, meaning CORS support is explicitly enabled; (2) the backend application or a pipeline handler sets an HTTP Vary header containing at least one auth-sensitive field such as Authorization or Cookie, intending to partition cached responses per-user; and (3) the application is deployed behind a caching proxy or CDN that caches HTTP responses and uses Vary headers as part of its cache key logic. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The NVD CVSS 6.5 vector (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:L/A:N) accurately captures that exploitation requires a high-complexity conjunction of conditions - a caching proxy or CDN in the request path AND the backend application explicitly setting per-user Vary headers - which substantially limits real-world blast radius despite the C:H confidentiality rating. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Upgrade io.netty:netty-codec-http to 4.1.137.Final (https://github.com/netty/netty/releases/tag/netty-4.1.137.Final) or 4.2.17.Final (https://github.com/netty/netty/releases/tag/netty-4.2.17.Final), both confirmed released by the vendor. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
