Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the attacker to supply or intercept a support-bundle archive that ASCG ingests from a remote endpoint - specifically, control or man-in-the-middle over archive files originating from an already-compromised ingested endpoint (this is the AT:P attack requirement). The vulnerable code path is the support-bundle archive extraction routine, which fails to sanitize path-traversal sequences in archive entries. Limiting factors: the vector is adjacent-network (AV:A), not remote Internet-facing, so the attacker needs a foothold or position on the management network; a compromised or spoofable ingesting endpoint is a precondition; and RCE depends on writing to a sensitive host path that is executed or loaded. Affected versions are Brocade ASCG before 3.5.0; no user interaction or authentication is required once the archive-delivery precondition is met.

Impact

Signals are mixed and point to a moderate, conditional risk rather than an urgent priority. The vendor-supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:A/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N, VC:H/VI:H/VA:H) scores 7.7 (High) and indicates an unauthenticated vector with high impact to confidentiality, integrity, and availability - but it is explicitly adjacent-network (AV:A), not Internet-wide (AV:N), and carries AT:P, meaning a specific attack requirement must be met. That requirement is substantial: the attacker must be able to send or intercept support-bundle archives ingested from an already-compromised remote endpoint, so the flaw is not trivially reachable against a default, isolated deployment. No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, POC, or SSVC decision data was provided, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified from the input. There is no indication of active exploitation. Net assessment: a genuinely impactful path-traversal-to-RCE bug, but gated behind adjacency plus a precondition (control or interception of ingested archives), which places it below network-unauthenticated 'drop everything' issues. Prioritize patching on exposed or multi-tenant management networks; de-prioritize for well-segmented deployments. Note: RCE is described as a potential ('potentially leading to') outcome, not confirmed, so the I/A:H impact rating should be verified against the vendor advisory.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who has compromised an endpoint that submits support bundles to Brocade ASCG - or who can intercept that traffic on the adjacent management network - crafts a malicious archive whose entries contain path-traversal sequences (e.g. ../../). When ASCG (before 3.5.0) extracts the bundle without sanitizing the paths, attacker-controlled files are written outside the intended directory to restricted host locations, which can be leveraged for remote code execution. No public exploit identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 08, 2026

Path traversal in Brocade Active Support Connectivity Gateway (ASCG) before 3.5.0 lets an unauthenticated attacker write arbitrary files to restricted host locations by embedding traversal sequences in entries of a support-bundle archive that ASCG ingests from remote endpoints, with the potential for follow-on remote code execution if a written path is later executed or loaded. The attack is not internet-facing: exploitation is scored AV:A (adjacent network) with the CVSS 4.0 AT:P precondition, meaning the attacker must already control or be able to man-in-the-middle support bundles originating from a compromised or spoofed ingesting endpoint. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and the CVE is not listed in CISA KEV, so the practical risk is a moderate, conditional one that depends on an attacker holding a management-network position and a compromised ingestion source rather than an urgent, broadly exploitable issue.

RemediationAI

Upgrade Brocade ASCG to 3.5.0 or later, which is the version boundary identified in the advisory as containing the fix, and consult the Broadcom/Brocade security advisory at https://support.broadcom.com/external/content/SecurityAdvisories/0/38389 for the applicable firmware or software package and any product-specific upgrade sequence. Until the upgrade is complete, the most effective compensating control is to remove the exposure precondition: do not ingest support bundles from endpoints that are not individually trusted and authenticated, and terminate ingestion over mutually authenticated TLS so that a network-position attacker cannot substitute or modify bundles in transit - the trade-off is that unauthenticated or ad-hoc diagnostic collection stops working until endpoints are properly enrolled. Where that is impractical, restrict ASCG management and ingestion interfaces to a tightly segmented management VLAN or admin jump host and block access from general user or endpoint networks (this directly reduces the AV:A reachability but limits operational convenience for distributed support collection), and run the ASCG service under a least-privilege account or container with its filesystem view confined to the extraction directory so that a successful traversal write cannot reach executable or configuration paths. Monitoring detection can include integrity checks and file-creation alerts on directories outside the ASCG extraction root, and anomalous outbound behavior from the ASCG host, since a traversal write that lands on an executed path is the precursor to code execution; there is no vendor-released standalone mitigation other than the 3.5.0 upgrade, and no vendor-released patch for versions already past end of support has been identified at time of analysis.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is a classic archive-extraction path traversal (Zip Slip) class issue, CWE-22. Brocade ASCG collects support bundles from remote managed endpoints for diagnostics; when such an archive is processed, the extraction routine does not canonicalize or validate the member paths inside the archive before writing them to disk, so entries containing '../' sequences (or absolute paths) escape the intended extraction directory and land in restricted locations on the underlying host. The affected product is identified by the CPE cpe:2.3:a:brocade:brocade_active_support_connectivity_gateway:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, a wildcard CPE indicating all versions are in scope for the advisory; the description narrows the fixed boundary to 3.5.0. The vendor-assigned CVSS 4.0 vector CVSS:4.0/AV:A/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N indicates an adjacent-network, low-complexity attack that requires pre-existing conditions (AT:P) but no privileges (PR:N) and no user interaction (UI:N), producing high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact confined to the vulnerable system. Our independent assessment maps this to CVSS:3.1/AV:A/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, treating the conditionality of the archive-delivery step as high attack complexity rather than low, which is why the assessed severity is more conservative than the vendor's 7.7. In short: the primitive is arbitrary file write via unsanitized archive member paths; RCE is a consequence, not a guarantee, and depends on hitting a host path that is executed or loaded.

DescriptionCVE.org

When Brocade ASCG before 3.5.0 processes support bundle archives ingested from remote compromised endpoints, the application fails to sanitize path traversal sequences contained within archive entries prior to extraction. An unauthenticated remote attacker capable of sending or intercepting ingested archive files can leverage this flaw to write arbitrary files to restricted locations on the underlying host, potentially leading to remote code execution.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Brocade Active Support Connectivity Gateway (ASCG) deployments before 3.5.0 are affected by a high-severity path traversal that could allow an attacker on the adjacent management network to write arbitrary files to restricted host locations and potentially achieve follow-on code execution. The risk is conditional rather than broadly exploitable: it requires a management-network position and control or spoofing of a support-bundle ingestion endpoint, and no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis. Security leadership should treat this as a management-plane integrity risk because a successful compromise could impact support connectivity and provide a foothold into critical SAN management infrastructure.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

Restrict network access to ASCG management interfaces to trusted adjacent hosts; enforce strict validation of support-bundle archives and reject traversal sequences; ingest bundles only from authenticated, known endpoints; segment ASCG from general management networks; apply least privilege to ASCG service accounts; enable file integrity monitoring and detailed logging; consider disabling remote support-bundle ingestion until a vendor fix is available.
