Config is supplied as data and executed when the victim runs the app, so AV:L/UI:R/PR:N; arbitrary code execution yields full C/I/A impact with no scope change.

Hydra is a framework for elegantly configuring complex applications. Prior to 1.3.6 and 1.4.0.dev9, Hydra passes Python logging configuration to logging.config.dictConfig() without applying Hydra's target policy to handler class values or formatter, filter, handler, queue, and listener factories. An attacker who controls Hydra logging configuration can therefore select an importable class or factory and cause it to be invoked with the application's privileges, even in versions where instantiate() is protected because the logging path does not use instantiate(). This issue is fixed in versions 1.3.6 and 1.4.0.dev9.

AnalysisAI
Code injection in the Hydra configuration framework (all releases prior to 1.3.6 and 1.4.0.dev9) lets an attacker who controls the application's Hydra logging configuration name an arbitrary importable class or factory that Hydra will then import and invoke with the application's own privileges. Hydra routes logging settings to Python's logging.config.dictConfig() without applying its own target policy, so the handler 'class' values and the formatter, filter, handler, queue and listener factories are resolved and called directly - this bypasses the _target_whitelist_ protection that otherwise guards instantiate(), meaning even hardened deployments are exposed. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | The attacker must control Hydra's logging configuration - specifically the values passed to logging.config.dictConfig() via hydra.hydra_logging, including handler class values or the formatter, filter, handler, queue, and listener factory entries - and set one of them to an importable class or factory. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | This is a code-injection flaw (CWE-94) in the Hydra Python configuration framework, rated CVSS 7.8 with vector AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |

| Remediation | Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Hydra 1.3.6 or 1.4.0.dev9, which apply the target whitelist to the logging configuration path (see advisory GHSA-c3wx-c55w-pxjq; upstream fixes are the commits https://github.com/hydra-ecosystem/hydra/commit/76bfc30ce1f3105416941dd2e3a562568e369120 and https://github.com/hydra-ecosystem/hydra/commit/ff3e4dba890c29a21d8c2bb867ee87d37ccf21d0, tracked by pull request https://github.com/hydra-ecosystem/hydra/pull/3420). … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours, inventory all Hydra configuration framework deployments and confirm whether they run affected releases prior to 1.3.6 or 1.4.0.dev9; restrict filesystem and repository write access to Hydra logging configuration files, overrides, and any shared or untrusted config sources to trusted administrators; review logging configs for arbitrary class or factory values and run Hydra applications with least privilege. …
