2 techniques across 2 tactics: Execution, Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that the consuming application (1) decode an attacker-supplied 32-bit floating-point TIFF specifically into Image<HalfVector4>, and (2) apply the global HistogramEqualization processor to it, producing a non-finite or out-of-range BT.709 luminance that becomes an unchecked histogram offset. Limiting factors that reduce real-world exposure: Adaptive Histogram Equalization and AutoLevel are explicitly NOT affected, so applications using those variants are safe; the app must actively choose the HalfVector4 pixel type and the equalization step rather than merely accept an upload; and impact is limited to process termination (availability only, no data exposure or code execution). Affected versions are ImageSharp 2.0.0 up to but not including 4.1.2. |
| Impact | The input CVSS is 7.5 (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H), an availability-only impact - process termination (denial of service) with no confidentiality or integrity loss, consistent with CWE-787 out-of-bounds access that crashes rather than achieves code execution. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC are present in the input, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The network vector and low attack complexity look alarming in isolation, but the real-world trigger is narrow: it fires only when a consuming application decodes an attacker-supplied 32-bit floating-point TIFF specifically as Image<HalfVector4> AND then applies the global HistogramEqualization processor - Adaptive Histogram Equalization and AutoLevel are explicitly unaffected. This is therefore a conditional DoS, not a broadly exploitable RCE; it is a genuine but moderate priority, higher for services that auto-process untrusted uploads through that exact code path and low for everyone else. Note a significant data conflict: the referenced PR #3187 and commit diff concern ICC color-profile channel-count validation and stream read-range bounds checks, NOT the described TIFF/HalfVector4/GetBT709Luminance histogram-offset path - verify with the vendor advisory (GHSA-j3p4-wp97-rph4) that the linked fix actually addresses this described flaw. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker uploads a crafted 32-bit floating-point TIFF to a .NET service that decodes images as Image<HalfVector4> and runs global HistogramEqualization on them. The non-finite/out-of-range luminance from ColorNumerics.GetBT709Luminance is used as an unchecked histogram offset in GrayscaleLevelsRowOperation.Invoke, causing an out-of-range access that terminates the worker process (denial of service). No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis; remote attackers need no authentication (PR:N) or user interaction, but the application must be using the specific decode-and-equalize path. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 06, 2026
Denial of service in SixLabors ImageSharp (2.0.0 up to but not including 4.1.2) lets a remote, unauthenticated attacker terminate an image-processing process by supplying a crafted 32-bit floating-point TIFF. The attack only succeeds when the consuming application decodes that TIFF into an Image<HalfVector4> and then applies the global HistogramEqualization processor, at which point a non-finite or out-of-range BT.709 luminance value is consumed as an unchecked histogram offset in GrayscaleLevelsRowOperation.Invoke, producing an out-of-bounds access (CWE-787) and process termination. Impact is availability-only (CVSS 7.5, C:N/I:N/A:H); Adaptive Histogram Equalization and AutoLevel are explicitly unaffected, and no public exploit code or CISA KEV listing was identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Upgrade SixLabors.ImageSharp to version 4.1.2 or later (vendor-released patch: 4.1.2), available from the release page at https://github.com/SixLabors/ImageSharp/releases/tag/v4.1.2 and the NuGet feed; the fix is described in advisory GHSA-j3p4-wp97-rph4 and implemented via PR #3187 / commit c4c4bf292298c026df470db1a17ff826515fd95d. If upgrading is not immediately possible, the most direct compensating control is to stop decoding untrusted 32-bit floating-point TIFF input into Image<HalfVector4> - either reject FP TIFF samples outright, constrain the decoder to standard integer pixel formats, or gate the HalfVector4 path behind a trusted-input check; because the crash is only reachable through that pixel type plus the global HistogramEqualization step, simply not invoking HistogramEqualization on untrusted images, or using the unaffected Adaptive Histogram Equalization or AutoLevel processors instead, also removes the vulnerable code path (trade-off: equalization output looks different and AutoLevel is not a behavioral substitute). Where the image pipeline must remain reachable by untrusted uploads, isolate it so a crash is survivable: run decoding/processing in a separate process or container with bounded memory and CPU, a restart/health-check policy, and rate limiting on image submissions, accepting that a determined attacker can still cycle that worker (availability degradation rather than full outage). Do not treat image validation via metadata inspection alone as sufficient, and note that none of these workarounds address the underlying unchecked offset, so patching to 4.1.2 remains the only complete fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details
ImageSharp is a cross-platform .NET 2D graphics library (NuGet package SixLabors.ImageSharp, CPE cpe:2.3:a:sixlabors:imagesharp). The vulnerable path begins in the TIFF decoder, which supports 32-bit floating-point sample data; when such an image is decoded into the HalfVector4 pixel type, per-pixel color values can be non-finite (NaN/Infinity) or fall outside the nominal 0-1 range. The HistogramEqualization processor computes a luminance via ColorNumerics.GetBT709Luminance and buckets pixels by that luminance; because the value is not clamped or checked for finiteness, GrayscaleLevelsRowOperation.Invoke derives an index from it and uses it directly as a histogram offset. That out-of-range offset is the root cause class CWE-787 (out-of-bounds write/access), which in this managed-runtime context manifests as an unhandled exception or memory-safety fault that tears down the process rather than yielding code execution. The advisory's linked fix (PR #3187, commit c4c4bf292298c026df470db1a17ff826515fd95d) bundles related input-validation hardening in the same release, including explicit channel-count guards in the ICC profile calculators (ClutCalculator, LutEntryCalculator, TrcCalculator now reject more than four input/output channels) and new BufferedReadStream range-validation helpers that check read offsets/lengths before allocation.

Lifecycle Timeline
2DescriptionCVE.org
ImageSharp is a 2D graphics library. From 2.0.0 until 4.1.2, decoding an attacker-supplied 32-bit floating-point TIFF as Image<HalfVector4> and applying HistogramEqualization can produce a non-finite or out-of-range luminance in ColorNumerics.GetBT709Luminance. GrayscaleLevelsRowOperation.Invoke uses the resulting value as an unchecked histogram offset, causing an unsafe out-of-range access and process termination. Adaptive Histogram Equalization and AutoLevel are not affected by this report. This issue is fixed in version 4.1.2.

Executive ViewAI
A high-severity denial-of-service vulnerability in the SixLabors ImageSharp library (all versions from 2.0.0 up to, but not including, 4.1.2) allows a remote attacker to terminate an image-processing process with a single crafted 32-bit floating-point TIFF file. Exposure is limited to services that decode such a TIFF into an Image<HalfVector4> and then apply the global HistogramEqualization processor, so only a subset of image pipelines is reachable, but those that are can be knocked offline repeatedly at minimal cost to the attacker. The impact is availability-only with no data disclosure or code execution, and leadership should care because unpatched image upload, conversion, or rendering services can be disrupted on demand and no vendor-released patch was identified at time of analysis.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: disable or block TIFF decoding on affected pipelines; avoid the specific vulnerable path of decoding TIFF into Image<HalfVector4> followed by the global HistogramEqualization processor (Adaptive Histogram Equalization and AutoLevel are explicitly unaffected); run image decoding in isolated, resource-capped worker processes with hard timeouts and automatic restart; enforce input type/size validation, WAF filtering, and rate limiting on image endpoints; monitor for abnormal process termination and restart loops.

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.
Memory corruption occurs when a program writes data beyond the boundaries of allocated memory regions or accesses memory in unintended ways, violating the integrity of the process's address space.
