Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that the target application use ImageSharp (versions 2.0.0 through before 4.1.2) to decode attacker-supplied image input, and that the input be a 64-bit BigTIFF file whose Exif IFD declares an entry count while fewer than 20 bytes remain in the stream, causing ExifReader.ReadValue64 to return without advancing the stream or breaking the outer loop. The key limiting factor is that the deployment must accept and decode untrusted images; impact is further bounded to a single decoder thread's CPU consumption for an attacker-controlled time (the advisory explicitly does not claim worker-pool/thread-pool exhaustion), so a single malformed file degrades rather than fully denies service.

Impact

All signals point to a genuine but moderate-severity availability issue rather than a top-tier emergency. The input CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L, base 5.3 Medium) describes a remotely reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated condition with no confidentiality or integrity impact and only LOW availability impact - consistent with CWE-835 (loop with unreachable exit condition). No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code were supplied, so there is no evidence of active or imminent widespread exploitation. Crucially, the vendor description self-limits the impact: 'This report does not claim worker-pool exhaustion,' meaning a single decoder thread is tied up for an attacker-controlled duration rather than the whole service being denied - which is why A:L (not A:H) is appropriate and why this is not a crash-the-server bug. Net assessment: patch it if your application decodes untrusted/user-supplied images, but treat it as routine maintenance (medium) rather than an incident. No signals conflict; the main caveat is that the provided PR diff shows ICC-profile channel-count hardening and new stream-bounds helpers rather than the exact ExifReader.ReadValue64 fix named in the description, so verify the precise code change against the commit before claiming full remediation detail.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker submits a small, malformed BigTIFF image to an application (for example an image-upload or thumbnailing endpoint) that uses ImageSharp to decode it. The declared 64-bit BigTIFF IFD entry count is trusted, and because ExifReader.ReadValue64 returns without advancing the stream or breaking the loop when fewer than 20 bytes remain, the outer loop never terminates and one decoder thread spins, consuming CPU for an attacker-controlled duration. No public exploit identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 06, 2026

Malformed 64-bit BigTIFF input can pin a single ImageSharp decoder thread in an unbounded loop, causing sustained CPU consumption in applications that decode untrusted images with SixLabors ImageSharp versions 2.0.0 through 4.1.1. The root cause is that ExifReader.ReadValues64 trusts the 64-bit BigTIFF IFD entry count and iterates once per declared entry, while ExifReader.ReadValue64 returns without advancing the stream or terminating the outer loop when fewer than 20 bytes remain, so a small crafted file keeps one decoder thread spinning for an attacker-controlled duration. The advisory explicitly does not claim worker-pool or thread-pool exhaustion, so the practical effect is degradation rather than a complete denial of service; a fix is available in version 4.1.2, and no public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Upgrade SixLabors.ImageSharp to 4.1.2 or later - vendor-released patch: 4.1.2, per https://github.com/SixLabors/ImageSharp/releases/tag/v4.1.2 and advisory https://github.com/SixLabors/ImageSharp/security/advisories/GHSA-wmxv-xphr-5c9g; the corresponding code changes are in PR https://github.com/SixLabors/ImageSharp/pull/3187 (commit 92b12d72550ebb6be5b1e22e559c361fd863a6ec), which adds stream range-validation helpers and channel-count caps. If immediate upgrade is not possible, apply compensating controls that directly target the trigger condition: reject or quarantine 64-bit BigTIFF uploads and accept only the formats your application genuinely needs (trade-off: legitimate scientific/medical BigTIFF workflows break, so whitelist only trusted internal sources); run image decoding in a separate worker process or task with a hard CPU/wall-clock timeout and cancellation, so one spinning decoder thread is killed instead of degrading the host (trade-off: legitimate very large or high-resolution images may be aborted and must be retried or handled out-of-band); and cap the number of concurrent decode operations per instance so a single stuck decoder cannot consume all available cores (trade-off: throughput is reduced under legitimate peak load). Since exploitation is a per-thread CPU stall rather than memory corruption, monitoring for abnormally long single-thread decode times on TIFF/EXIF inputs is a practical detection measure. Note that no public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis, so prioritization should follow normal risk-based patch scheduling for a moderate-severity availability issue.

Technical ContextAI · show details

ImageSharp is a .NET 2D graphics library from Six Labors whose image decoders parse embedded EXIF metadata. BigTIFF is the 64-bit variant of the TIFF container format, in which image file directory (IFD) entry counts and offsets are expressed as 64-bit values rather than the 32-bit values of classic TIFF. The flaw maps to CWE-835 (Loop with Unreachable Exit Condition, i.e. an infinite loop): ReadValues64 derives the outer loop's iteration count directly from the attacker-supplied 64-bit IFD entry count, and the per-entry reader ReadValue64 is documented to return without consuming bytes when fewer than 20 bytes remain in the stream. Because that early return neither advances the stream position nor signals the outer loop to break, the decoder re-enters the same state indefinitely, burning CPU on one decoder thread. Notably, the referenced fix pull request (PR 3187) bundles broader parsing hardening alongside bounded-lookahead helpers - BufferedReadStreamExtensions.IsReadRangeValid and TryGetReadLength, which avoid offset/length overflow with untrusted 64-bit lengths, and a Seek-based Skip - plus explicit channel-count caps (four input/output channels) in the ICC CLUT, LUT, and TRC calculators, indicating a systematic tightening of trust in untrusted metadata lengths. The rated vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L is consistent with this: no confidentiality or integrity impact, no privileges or user interaction required, and a low availability impact bounded to a single decoding thread. The affected product identifier is cpe:2.3:a:sixlabors:imagesharp:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, i.e. the SixLabors.ImageSharp NuGet package.

DescriptionCVE.org

ImageSharp is a 2D graphics library. From 2.0.0 until 4.1.2, ExifReader.ReadValues64 trusts the 64-bit BigTIFF IFD entry count and iterates once per declared entry. When fewer than 20 bytes remain, ExifReader.ReadValue64 returns without advancing the stream or terminating the outer loop, so a small malformed BigTIFF can keep one decoder thread executing for an attacker-controlled duration. This report does not claim worker-pool exhaustion. This issue is fixed in version 4.1.2.
