| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires a downstream consumer to actually rely on one of the affected fail-open gates in aiir < 1.7.0: the require_signing policy gate (satisfiable by a forgeable/empty field), the CI verification path (returns success regardless of result), the release-verification gate (advertises unenforced policy limits), or a signature-verification path that is silently skipped for certain input categories. The attacker supplies an unsigned, forged-bundle, or non-conforming receipt and the gate falsely reports 'verified'. LIMITING FACTORS: it does not forge valid cryptographic signatures and does not compromise content-addressing or correctly-signed receipts; it is ineffective where full Sigstore verification is enforced (pip install aiir[sign], --verify-signature with --signer-identity/--signer-issuer), which provides defense in depth; and it only affects released versions below 1.7.0. |
| Impact | The input CVSS 4.0 base score is 6.9 (medium), with vector AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N but impact limited to VI:L (low integrity) and VC:N/VA:N - no confidentiality or availability impact. No EPSS probability, CISA KEV listing, or POC/exploit-code signal was provided, and the CVSS exploit-maturity metric is undefined (E:X), so there is no public exploitation evidence at this time. Realistically this is a moderate-to-low priority rather than a critical one: the flaw is a fail-open logic weakness (CWE-347) that yields a false 'verified' result, not code execution or data theft, and it cannot forge valid signatures or compromise correctly-signed receipts. Exploitation is only meaningful where a downstream consumer actually relies on one of the affected gates. Two signals conflict with the vendor data and should be flagged: the 'Information Disclosure' tag contradicts the CVSS (VC:N means no confidentiality impact - this is an integrity issue), and the 'Jwt Attack' tag is not supported by the advisory, which describes Sigstore/receipt signing rather than JWT. The product is also abandoned (its GitHub repo is no longer available and it is unsupported), which lowers real-world exposure further. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker submits an unsigned, forged-bundle, or non-conforming receipt to a workflow that relies on AIIR's require_signing policy gate, release/policy verification, or CI verification check. Because the affected path fails open, the gate returns a 'verified'/'pass' result without enforcing the control, so the forged artifact is accepted as trusted. No public exploit code was identified in the provided data; the weakness does not forge valid cryptographic signatures and does not affect correctly-signed receipts. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 04, 2026
AIIR (invariant-systems-ai aiir) versions prior to 1.7.0 contain fail-open verification and policy gate flaws that allow unauthenticated remote attackers to bypass signature verification controls. When a downstream consumer relies on an affected gate-such as the require_signing policy gate, the CI verification path, the release-verification gate, or a signature-verification path-an attacker can supply an unsigned, forged-bundle, or non-conforming receipt and the gate will falsely report 'verified' or success. This results in low integrity impact (no confidentiality or availability impact) and affects only released versions below 1.7.0; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, and the vulnerability is fixed in 1.7.0.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to aiir >= 1.7.0, which fixes all affected fail-open paths and adds regression tests. The GitHub advisory states that every affected path now fails closed. For earlier versions, there are no workarounds other than upgrading; however, full cryptographic Sigstore verification (pip install aiir[sign], and using --verify-signature with --signer-identity/--signer-issuer) provides defense in depth and is not subject to the fail-open behavior because it enforces signature verification independently. If upgrading is not possible, restrict reliance on the affected gates (require_signing, CI verification, release verification, and signature verification) and manually verify receipts using full Sigstore verification; note that this requires the [sign] extra and proper configuration. Since the project repository is no longer available and the product is unsupported, obtaining the patched version may require using a package index or mirror that retains the 1.7.0 release. Refer to the vendor advisory at https://github.com/invariant-systems-ai/aiir/security/advisories/GHSA-73p9-6hrp-8qhr for details.

Technical ContextAI · show details
AIIR is a verification tool that uses policy gates to enforce cryptographic signature checks and other controls on receipts or bundles. The vulnerability is classified as CWE-347 (Improper Verification of Cryptographic Signature), but rather than forging valid signatures, the affected policy gate handler (and related verification paths) fails open: it can return a success or 'verified' result without actually enforcing the required control. Specifically, the require_signing gate can be satisfied by a forgeable or empty field, the CI verification path can report success regardless of the underlying result, the release-verification gate can advertise policy limits it does not enforce, and a signature-verification path can be silently skipped for certain input categories. This allows an attacker to bypass signature verification and have unsigned or forged receipts accepted as valid. The flaw is rooted in improper logic in the verification and policy gate components, not in cryptographic primitives. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:invariant-systems-ai:aiir:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* identifies the affected product, and the vulnerable range is all versions before 1.7.0. Full cryptographic Sigstore verification (pip install aiir[sign], --verify-signature with --signer-identity/--signer-issuer) enforces checks that the fail-open paths bypass and provides defense in depth.

DescriptionCVE.org
A flaw has been found in invariant-systems-ai aiir up to 1.7.0. The affected element is an unknown function of the component Policy Gate Handler. Executing a manipulation can lead to improper verification of cryptographic signature. The attack can be executed remotely. It is advisable to upgrade the affected component. The GitHub repository of this project is not available anymore. This vulnerability only affects products that are no longer supported by the maintainer.
