Network-reachable API but requires authentication (PR:L), identifier prediction and a timing race (AC:H), victim login interaction (UI:R), and cross-user token/session theft changes scope (S:C) with high C/I and no availability impact.

ZITADEL 4.x before 4.17.3 and 3.x through 3.4.15 protects IdP intent tokens with unauthenticated, malleable encryption, allowing authenticated users to tamper with their own token so it is accepted for another user's external login intent. An attacker who predicts a victim's in-flight intent identifier and wins a timing race can call /v2/idp_intents or /v2/sessions to steal the victim's IdP tokens or hijack their session.
AnalysisAI
Session hijacking and theft of external IdP tokens in ZITADEL 4.x before 4.17.3 and ZITADEL 3.x through 3.4.15 stem from IdP intent tokens that are encrypted without integrity protection, so an authenticated user (CVSS PR:L) can tamper with a token issued for their own login intent and have it accepted for another user's intent. An attacker who correctly predicts a victim's in-flight intent identifier and wins a timing race while the victim is completing an external IdP login can call /v2/idp_intents or /v2/sessions to steal the victim's IdP tokens or take over the resulting session. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires (1) the attacker to hold a valid authenticated ZITADEL account (PR:L); (2) the target deployment to use external IdP login intents - i.e., the IdP intent flow via /v2/idp_intents and /v2/sessions must be in use; (3) the attacker to correctly predict the victim's in-flight intent identifier; and (4) the attacker to win a timing race while the victim is actively performing an external IdP login (UI:P, passive victim participation). … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | This is a genuine but conditional priority rather than a trivially exploitable mass-threat. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Apply the vendor fix: upgrade ZITADEL 4.x installations to 4.17.3, and move ZITADEL 3.x deployments off the affected range (up to and including 3.4.15) to the corresponding fixed 3.x release referenced in advisory GHSA-jh3m-cr2x-qp88 (https://github.com/zitadel/zitadel/security/advisories/GHSA-jh3m-cr2x-qp88), which is the authoritative source for the exact fixed version on the 3.x line. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours, inventory every ZITADEL deployment and confirm exact versions, flagging any instance on ZITADEL 4.x before 4.17.3 or ZITADEL 3.x through 3.4.15, restrict administrative and /v2/idp_intents and /v2/sessions endpoints to trusted networks, and enable verbose authentication and session auditing. …
