ZITADEL before 3.4.14 and 4.x before 4.16.2 contains an authentication bypass in the hosted Login V1 UI because the 'external account not found' registration endpoint trusts client-supplied external identity fields without a completed IdP callback. Unauthenticated attackers can submit forged IDPConfigID and ExternalUserID values to pre-create an account bound to a victim's external IdP identity, which the victim's later genuine external login then signs into.
AnalysisAI
Account pre-hijacking in ZITADEL lets an unauthenticated remote attacker create a user record already bound to a victim's external identity provider subject, so that the victim's later, legitimate external login is transparently signed into the attacker-controlled account. Affected deployments are ZITADEL before 3.4.14 and 4.x before 4.16.2 that still run the legacy hosted Login V1 UI with at least one external IdP configured; exploitation also requires the attacker to know a valid IDPConfigID and the victim's ExternalUserID, which tempers the 9.3 CVSS 4.0 rating (independent assessment: CVSS 3.1 AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N with high confidentiality and integrity impact). …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires the target ZITADEL instance to use the hosted Login V1 UI (the legacy login flow) with at least one external identity provider configured, and the 'external account not found' registration endpoint must be reachable. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | This is a genuine high-priority vulnerability, not a high-CVSS/low-real-risk case. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Apply the vendor-released patches: upgrade the 3.x line to ZITADEL 3.4.14 or later and the 4.x line to 4.16.2 or later, following the guidance in GHSA-738m-7888-jfv8 (https://github.com/zitadel/zitadel/security/advisories/GHSA-738m-7888-jfv8) and the VulnCheck advisory (https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/zitadel-before-4.16.2-account-pre-hijacking-via-forged-external-idp-callback). … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours, identify all ZITADEL deployments running versions before 3.4.14 or 4.x before 4.16.2 with the legacy hosted Login V1 UI and at least one external IdP configured, and immediately disable external IdP logins or migrate to the newer Login V2 UI. …
