n8n versions before 2.39.6 and 2.40.0 before 2.40.1 contain a credentials leak vulnerability in the Wekan and Baserow username-and-password credentials that sends unencrypted passwords to unvalidated hosts. Attackers with credential update permissions can modify the host field to receive account passwords at arbitrary hosts, bypassing domain validation controls.

AnalysisAI
Credential theft in n8n before 2.39.6 and 2.40.0 before 2.40.1 allows an authenticated user with credential-update permissions to modify the host field of Wekan or Baserow username-and-password credentials, causing unencrypted passwords to be sent to an attacker-controlled destination that bypasses n8n's domain validation. Exploitation requires that the tampered credential is actually used by a workflow, and the attacker must already hold a valid account or session with rights to edit credentials. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Requires an authenticated n8n user who holds credential-update permissions (PR:L) and the presence of a Wekan or Baserow username-and-password credential type; the attacker modifies that credential's host field to an attacker-controlled destination, bypassing n8n's domain validation. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | Moderate, authenticated-only credential-theft risk. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Vendor-released patches are available: upgrade to n8n 2.39.6 or later, or to 2.40.1 or later for the 2.40.x line. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours, inventory all n8n deployments and identify instances running versions before 2.39.6 or 2.40.0 before 2.40.1; apply the vendor-released patch to version 2.39.6 or 2.40.1 (or later) on internet-facing or business-critical instances first, and if patching cannot be completed immediately, restrict credential-edit permissions to essential personnel, review Wekan and Baserow credentials for unexpected host-field changes, and rotate any credentials suspected of exposure. …
