MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated/authorized connected gateway or agent that can invoke the system.run capability but is intended to be constrained by the exec-approval policy (an allow/deny ruleset) - the bypass only matters where such a restrictive policy is configured to gate commands. The attacker then evades approval by embedding denied commands behind an allowed prefix using shell metacharacters that ExecShellWrapperParser (before 2026.7.1) mis-parses: pipe operators ( |
| Impact | This is a genuinely elevated-priority authorization bypass. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H, 8.7) indicates a network-reachable, low-complexity, low-privilege flaw with full confidentiality/integrity/availability impact and no user interaction - consistent with the description's outcome of arbitrary command execution on Windows hosts. The one real gate is PR:L: the attacker must already be a connected gateway or agent permitted to invoke system.run under the exec-approval policy, so this is a privilege-escalation/control-bypass by an authorized-but-restricted party rather than a fully anonymous internet attacker. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit were provided, so there is no evidence of active exploitation - but the vulnerability is reported by VulnCheck with a detailed root-cause and a vendor patch, and the bypass technique (pipe operators and command substitution) is trivially reproducible for anyone who reads the advisory or diff. The patch commit is public and clearly reveals the parser gap, which materially lowers the barrier to weaponization even though no POC is catalogued. Net: real priority for anyone running OpenClaw Windows Node with a restrictive exec-approval policy, tempered by the niche deployment footprint and the PR:L prerequisite. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 30, 2026
Arbitrary command execution on Windows hosts is achievable through OpenClaw Windows Node versions prior to 2026.7.1, where the system.run exec-approval policy can be evaded by an authenticated connected gateway or agent holding the PR:L role. The ExecShellWrapperParser fails to split commands on pipe operators or extract command-substitution/subexpression syntax, so a denied command placed behind an allowed prefix (for example benign | denied or echo $(denied)) is never surfaced to the allow/deny ruleset and executes anyway; the failure only yields a bypass where a restrictive exec-approval policy is actually configured, and the impact is confined to Windows targets. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, and the issue is not confirmed as actively exploited (no CISA KEV listing); vendor-released patch 2026.7.1 is available.
RemediationAI
Upgrade OpenClaw Windows Node to 2026.7.1, the vendor-released patched version available at https://github.com/openclaw/openclaw-windows-node/releases/tag/v2026.7.1; the corresponding code fix is commit 2077aa3e7159101bddcee2f4efcb9d604a81619e, and advisory details are at GHSA-r3x2-vf2f-vvj8 and GHSA-vg38-vjq2-vgvh. Where immediate upgrade is not possible, note that the bypass is only exploitable when an exec-approval policy is actively restricting commands, so deploy the strongest available compensating controls at the policy and identity layers: (1) restrict which gateways and agents may invoke the system.run capability at all, so the PR:L role is granted narrowly - the trade-off is reduced operational flexibility for automation clients; (2) until patched binaries are deployed, add explicit deny rules matching shell metacharacters (|, $(, backticks, @(, and unquoted () so that any invocation containing them is refused rather than evaluated by the pre-2026.7.1 parser - this is a fail-closed posture that will also block legitimate piped and substituted commands, which must be weighed against workflow disruption; (3) consider disabling system.run on Windows nodes entirely if the policy cannot be reliably tightened, accepting the loss of remote execution functionality. Neither workaround removes the underlying parser flaw, so treat 2026.7.1 as the required fix and avoid relying on the old approval policy as a security boundary in the interim.

Technical ContextAI · show details
OpenClaw Windows Node implements an exec-approval policy that inspects each command submitted through the system.run capability before permitting execution, and ExecShellWrapperParser (src/OpenClaw.Shared/ExecShellWrapperParser.cs) is the component responsible for decomposing a command line into the discrete commands a shell will actually run so each can be matched against the ruleset. The root cause is CWE-863 (Incorrect Authorization): the parser's splitter only treated ;, && and || as top-level separators and did not treat a single | pipeline character as one, nor did it descend into command substitutions and subexpressions. Because a shell executes every pipeline stage and evaluates $(...), @(...), backtick and bare (...) constructs, an attacker could hide a denied executor behind an allowed first stage (... | iex, ... | Remove-Item) or inside a substitution (echo $(Remove-Item ...)) and have it evaluated without ever appearing as an approval target. The upstream fix in commit 2077aa3e7159101bddcee2f4efcb9d604a81619e adds | as a top-level separator, tracks unquoted parenthesis depth so separators inside subexpressions are not mis-split, extracts each inner command of $(...), @(...) and backtick spans for separate approval, and fails closed when it encounters an execution-introducing construct it cannot safely decompose - while explicitly exempting cmd.exe (which has no $()/backtick, and whose (...) grouping chains through already-split separators, preserving validity of paths such as C:\Program Files (x86)). The change is shell-aware: bare ( subexpressions and backticks are flagged for PowerShell and POSIX shells respectively, with single- and double-quote state tracked so quoted literals are not falsely flagged.

DescriptionCVE.org
OpenClaw Windows Node before 2026.7.1 contains an incorrect authorization vulnerability in the system.run exec-approval policy where ExecShellWrapperParser fails to split commands on pipe operators or extract command substitutions. Connected gateways or agents can bypass approval rules by placing denied commands behind allowed prefixes using pipe operators or command substitution syntax, achieving arbitrary command execution on Windows hosts.

Executive ViewAI
OpenClaw Windows Node deployments prior to 2026.7.1 contain a command-approval bypass that can let a low-privileged connected gateway or agent execute arbitrary commands on Windows hosts, undermining endpoint security controls. Because the flaw only manifests where restrictive exec-approval policies are configured, affected organizations may falsely believe those controls are effective, increasing risk of unauthorized system changes, lateral movement, or data loss. Leadership should prioritize patching to 2026.7.1 and validating policy enforcement across all Windows nodes.
