Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that U-Boot process an attacker-supplied RLE8-compressed BMP image through its BMP display path (e.g. the boot splash-screen feature or a 'bmp display' invocation) - the crafted image is the exact prerequisite. The vulnerable code lacks framebuffer bounds checking on RLE run counts, so the attacker must control the content of the displayed BMP, which in most deployments means write access to the boot media, splash partition, or the environment-configured image source, or the ability to feed the image over whatever boot-time channel a given board uses. Limiting factors: the BMP-display/RLE8 path and a splash/logo configuration must be in use; primary impact is a crash/DoS with only limited integrity corruption and no confidentiality loss; and the vendor's AT:P plus adjacent vector indicate this is not remote-unauthenticated against arbitrary default configurations.

Impact

This is a moderate-severity memory-corruption flaw whose real-world risk is materially lower than its 6.0 CVSS4 score might suggest at a glance. The vendor vector (CVSS:4.0/AV:A/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:L/VA:H) is availability-dominant: the confirmed impact is memory corruption adjacent to the framebuffer and a bootloader crash (VA:H), with only limited integrity impact (VI:L) and no confidentiality impact (VC:N). No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public proof-of-concept were provided, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' - this is not confirmed active exploitation and should not be treated as a zero-day. The AT:P (attack requirements: present) and AV:A choices signal that exploitation is not turnkey: the attacker must get a crafted RLE8-compressed BMP into the exact code path that renders it. The vendor's PR:N (unauthenticated) is defensible only if the BMP is delivered via an unauthenticated channel (e.g. a network/splash source); in the more common case where the attacker must first plant the image on boot media or in an env-configured splash location, effective privileges are higher - this is a genuine ambiguity to verify. The patch is confirmed available (commit 5201e83342d6). Net: a real, patch-worthy defensive-hardening bug in an extremely widely deployed component, but the narrow trigger (must control the displayed BMP), crash-only primary impact, and absence of exploitation signals keep it a medium, not urgent, priority.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who can influence the BMP image the bootloader renders - for example by writing a malicious boot logo to a splash-screen partition/storage location or supplying it over a boot-time image channel - crafts an RLE8-compressed BMP whose run-length counts drive writes past the end of the framebuffer. When U-Boot decodes and displays the image, video_display_rle8_bitmap writes out-of-bounds, corrupting memory adjacent to the framebuffer and crashing the bootloader (denial of service), with potential for limited memory corruption. No public exploit code is currently identified, and the attack requires control over the displayed image rather than a simple remote request.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 29, 2026

Out-of-bounds write in the U-Boot bootloader's RLE8-compressed BMP decoder (video_display_rle8_bitmap in drivers/video/video_bmp.c) lets an attacker who can place or modify a crafted splash/logo image write past the framebuffer, corrupting adjacent memory and crashing the bootloader. All U-Boot versions through 2026.10-rc5 are affected per the wildcard CPE, but exploitation is genuinely constrained: the platform must actually route an attacker-controlled BMP through the BMP display path, which in typical deployments means write access to boot media, the splash partition, or the environment-configured image source, and the outcome is primarily availability loss with only limited integrity impact and no confidentiality exposure. No public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis, and the risk is moderate rather than critical despite the headline score.

RemediationAI

Apply the upstream fix commit 5201e83342d64c2f438ea35158575f28225e752e (https://github.com/u-boot/u-boot/commit/5201e83342d64c2f438ea35158575f28225e752e), which introduces framebuffer bounds checks and error propagation in video_display_rle8_bitmap(); the advisory confirms a vendor patch is available, though a specific released U-Boot version containing it was not independently confirmed, so downstream board vendors should be asked to backport the commit or confirm the first fixed release. Where patching is not immediately possible, the most effective compensating control is to build U-Boot without the RLE8 decoder (disable CONFIG_VIDEO_BMP_RLE8, or the RLE8 path in the BMP display code), at the cost of losing RLE8-compressed splash images and requiring any existing logo to be re-encoded as an uncompressed BMP. Because the prerequisite is control over the displayed image, also restrict write access to boot media, splash partitions and the environment that selects the image source, and ensure firmware/logo updates are delivered through a signed, integrity-verified mechanism (for example a signed FIT image or verified-boot chain) so a tampered BMP is rejected before it reaches the decoder; note that verified boot does not fix the decoder itself and must genuinely cover the splash payload to be effective. Finally, reduce the attack surface on boards where the splash feature is unused by disabling the BMP display command altogether, accepting the loss of the boot-logo capability.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is a classic CWE-787 out-of-bounds write in U-Boot's video subsystem. BMP images can use RLE8 (run-length encoded, 8-bit indexed) compression, in which the pixel data is a stream of run-length and absolute-mode opcodes rather than a flat bitmap. U-Boot's video_display_rle8_bitmap() walked that opcode stream and wrote decoded pixels into a buffer derived from the caller-supplied framebuffer pointer plus x/y offsets and image width/height, without validating that each RLE run (after multiplication by bytes-per-pixel) stayed inside the video device's allocated framebuffer region. Because run counts and offsets are attacker-controlled fields inside the image file, a crafted BMP could drive the destination pointer beyond the end of priv->fb and its priv->fb_size region. The upstream fix (commit 5201e83342d64c2f438ea35158575f28225e752e) computes fb_start and fb_end from priv->fb/priv->fb_size, adds guards in both the encoded-run and absolute-mode write paths that reject any write where the destination is below the start or where fb + cnt * bytes_per_pixel exceeds the end, changes the function's return type to int, returns -EINVAL on violation, and propagates that error up through video_bmp_display() so decoding aborts instead of corrupting memory. The wildcard CPE cpe:2.3:a:u-boot:u-boot:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* reflects that no version floor exists; every release up to and including 2026.10-rc5 carries the unchecked code.

Attack Technique

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.

Memory corruption occurs when a program writes data beyond the boundaries of allocated memory regions or accesses memory in unintended ways, violating the integrity of the process's address space.
