| Exploitation Conditions | Requires that the target application uses rhukster/dom-sanitizer prior to 1.0.15 to sanitize attacker-influenced HTML/SVG/MathML and then renders or serves that output. The attacker supplies a data: URL (e.g., data:text/html;base64,… or data:application/xhtml+xml / data:image/svg+xml with onload) in an href or xlink:href attribute; the flawed /^data:.*onload/i check only inspects for the literal substring 'onload', so any Base64-encoded payload passes. Exploitation is LIMITED by required victim interaction (UI:R - the victim must follow/interact with the surviving link) and by modern browser policies that block top-level navigation to data:text/html URLs, which can neutralize the most common payload form. No authentication is required to submit the content (PR:N). |
| Impact | This is a genuine but modest-severity sanitizer-bypass flaw, not a high-priority emergency. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:N/A:N = 4.7 Medium) is internally consistent with the mechanism: network-reachable content, low complexity, no privileges, but required victim interaction (clicking/following the surviving data: link) and only low confidentiality impact with a scope change into the browser context. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code were provided - so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The real-world risk is dampened by two independent factors: (1) it is exploitable only when a downstream application actually uses this specific library to sanitize attacker-controlled HTML/SVG and then renders it, and (2) modern browsers block top-level navigation to data:text/html URLs, meaning the classic data:text/html;base64 payload often fails to execute as active markup in current browsers, making the C:L rating arguably optimistic. The commit evidence and dedicated regression tests firmly CONFIRM the mechanism and the fix. Note the tag 'Information Disclosure' does not match the underlying weakness, which is a sanitizer bypass enabling active markup (XSS-class), even though the vendor mapped impact to C:L rather than I:H. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker submits user-generated content (e.g., an SVG or HTML fragment) to an application that relies on rhukster/dom-sanitizer <1.0.15 to sanitize it. The attacker embeds a href/xlink:href value like data:text/html;base64,<base64 of a script/onload payload>, which survives the flawed /^data:.*onload/i substring check because Base64 hides the dangerous markers; when a victim follows the link, the decoded active markup can run. No public PoC is provided, and success depends on victim interaction (UI:R) and browser handling of data: URLs. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 28, 2026
In rhukster/dom-sanitizer versions prior to 1.0.15, a data: URL containing Base64-encoded active markup (for example data:text/html;base64,… or data:image/svg+xml;base64,… with an onload handler) survives the isDangerousUrl() check and is emitted intact inside href and xlink:href attributes of sanitized HTML/SVG/MathML, allowing a sanitizer bypass that turns sanitized output into an injection vector when the application renders it. Exploitation is unauthenticated by the sanitizer itself (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N, assessed), but requires victim interaction - the victim must follow or trigger the surviving link - and is further constrained because modern browsers block top-level navigation to data:text/html URLs, which neutralizes the most common payload form; data: payloads consumed in other contexts (for example SVG <image> or embedded resource loading) remain more viable. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no KEV listing; EPSS data was not provided, and the vendor has released a patched version.
RemediationAI
Upgrade rhukster/dom-sanitizer to version 1.0.15 or later (vendor-released patch: 1.0.15), which enforces a scheme-and-MIME policy that rejects any data: URL unless it declares an inert image type and adds a post-serialization pass stripping non-image data: hrefs - see https://github.com/rhukster/dom-sanitizer/releases/tag/1.0.15 and the advisory https://github.com/rhukster/dom-sanitizer/security/advisories/GHSA-wcj2-r6vg-rm97, with the code changes in commits 10f97807e4501d60f63987f2e76a38cdbf312dcb and fb8f758b41134fc5fb2f563666f2330c69e31f94. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, apply a post-sanitization allow-list on href/xlink:href values that permits only http, https, and inert image data: MIME types (png, jpeg, gif, webp, bmp, x-icon, vnd.microsoft.icon), rejecting everything else - the trade-off is that legitimate embedded non-image data URIs stop working, and any allow-list must rerun after the sanitizer rather than before it, or re-encoding can reintroduce the bypass. A data:-denying Content-Security-Policy (for example restricting object-src, frame-src, and navigation targets, and avoiding unnecessary data: in img-src) provides meaningful defense in depth against SVG/XHTML payloads but does not fix the sanitizer itself and can break legitimate inline-image rendering. Note that because the missing check is content-blind, no blacklist of decoded markers ('onload', '<script>') is reliable without decoding and re-validating every data: URI; prefer version 1.0.15, whose policy is scheme-level and therefore not defeated by Base64 encoding.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is an incomplete input-validation/sanitization defect (CWE-20) inside DOMSanitizer's own URL policy rather than a flaw in any downstream application. The affected method, isDangerousUrl(), normalizes control characters and then rejects javascript: as a scheme, but handled data: only via the literal-substring test /^data:.*onload/i - that is, it flagged a data: URL only if the raw string happened to contain 'onload'. Because data: payloads are routinely Base64-encoded, the decoded document can contain <script> tags, event handlers, or SVG/XHTML markup while the encoded text bears no resemblance to those markers, so the substring test never fires. The upstream fix reframes the policy as scheme-and-MIME-level rather than content-level: any data: URL is now rejected unless its declared MIME type is an inert image (image/png, jpe?g, gif, webp, bmp, x-icon, vnd.microsoft.icon), and a post-serialization regex (SNEAKY_DATA_URL) strips any surviving href or xlink:href whose data: MIME is not an inert image, with the legacy /^data:.*onload/i check retained as a secondary guard for the allowed image types. The accompanying test suite adds cases for data:text/html, data:image/svg+xml, data:application/xhtml+xml, data:image/xml, and bare data: URLs across both SVG and HTML sanitizer modes, while asserting that benign data:image/png URLs are preserved. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:rhukster:dom-sanitizer:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* identifies the affected package (PHP 7.3+), and tags mark it as a PHP DOM sanitizer issue with information-disclosure/injection characteristics.

DOMSanitizer is a DOM/SVG/MathML Sanitizer for PHP 7.3+. Prior to version 1.0.15, the isDangerousUrl() method is responsible for rejecting dangerous URL values in the href and xlink:href attributes. The weakness is that "javascript:" is rejected as a scheme, while "data:" is rejected only when the literal substring onload appears in the URL value (/^data:.*onload/i). Because data: payloads are routinely Base64-encoded, the dangerous content (<script>, event handlers, etc.) is invisible to that substring test. A URL such as data:text/html;base64,… therefore survives in href / xlink:href, even though the decoded payload is active markup. This is an incomplete input-validation / sanitization defect in the sanitizer itself. This issue has been patched in version 1.0.15.
