Timing side-channel needs many network samples so AC:H; recovery endpoint is gated only by the token itself so PR:N; recovered token allows full read/modify/destroy of stored data giving C:H/I:H/A:H.

Impact
When running in the highly privileged recovery mode, OpenBao was vulnerable to a timing attack against the single recovery token. This allowed an attacker to extract the recovery token and use it to perform operations against the OpenBao instance, including reading or modification of data.
Patches
This has been patched in OpenBao v2.6.0.
AnalysisAI
Timing-based leakage of the single recovery token in OpenBao lets a remote, unauthenticated attacker who can reach the instance while it is running in highly privileged recovery mode recover that token and then read or modify data on the OpenBao instance. The exposure is constrained to the transient recovery-mode break-glass state rather than the normal serving configuration, and exploitation requires collecting a large volume of low-noise timing samples against the recovery endpoint (reflected in the CVSS 4.0 rating of 9.2 with AC:H and AT:P, and in the assessed CVSS 3.1 vector AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H). …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | OpenBao must be actively running in recovery mode - a highly privileged break-glass/maintenance state that is transient and not the normal serving configuration - for the vulnerable recovery-token endpoint (http/logical.go handleLogicalRecovery) to be reachable. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The CVSS 4.0 score of 9.2 (Critical) is driven by full triad impact (VC:H/VI:H/VA:H) reflecting that a leaked recovery token grants near-total control of the OpenBao instance. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Upgrade to OpenBao v2.6.0 or later, which is the exact fixed release per the vendor advisory (https://github.com/openbao/openbao/security/advisories/GHSA-34fc-gh42-pj53 and https://github.com/openbao/openbao/releases/tag/v2.6.0) and which replaces the non-constant-time token check in http/logical.go with crypto/subtle.ConstantTimeCompare (PRs 3388 and 3472, commit 0f2d90c331f25d1c6cd108638da03f4c7bd949a8); cross-check status via https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-34fc-gh42-pj53. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours, inventory all OpenBao instances to identify any version earlier than v2.6.0, confirm whether recovery mode is enabled or has been used, and restrict network access to recovery endpoints to trusted administrative networks only. …
