| Exploitation Conditions | Requires the victim to open an attacker-crafted PDF in Foxit PDF Editor or Foxit PDF Reader that contains an embedded attachment whose file name includes directory-traversal sequences; on open the product fails to validate the attachment path and writes the file outside the expected secure directory. Limiting factors: exploitation is local and user-interaction-gated (AV:L/UI:R) - the attacker cannot trigger it remotely without the user opening the document - and the raw impact is a file-write, so full compromise depends on writing to a location that yields code execution (e.g. autorun/startup path or overwriting a trusted file). No authentication is required of the attacker (PR:N). |
| Impact | The vendor CVSS of 7.8 (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) is internally consistent with the description: a path-traversal (CWE-73) in PDF attachment file-name handling that writes files outside the intended secure area. AV:L plus UI:R correctly capture that the attack is not remote-automatable - a victim must locally open a crafted PDF - so despite the 'HIGH' rating this is a user-interaction-gated client-side flaw, not a wormable network bug. The C:H/I:H/A:H triad is optimistic for a pure file-write primitive; arbitrary write to a controlled location (e.g. a startup/autorun path or overwriting a trusted binary/config) can plausibly escalate to full compromise, but that is a secondary consequence rather than a direct read of confidential data, so C:H in particular is defensible only through follow-on code execution. There is no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC referenced - the sole reference is Foxit's generic security-bulletins index page with no version, patch level, or advisory ID - so exploitation is unproven and this reads as a real-but-not-urgent client-side issue rather than an actively exploited priority. Missing data to verify with the vendor: exact fixed version, affected platform(s), and whether the write primitive has been demonstrated to reach code execution. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker crafts a PDF whose embedded attachment carries a traversal sequence (e.g. ..\..\) in its file name and delivers it via email or a download link; when the victim opens it in Foxit PDF Editor/Reader, the malicious attachment is written outside the sandboxed/temp area to an attacker-chosen path such as a user startup folder, achieving code execution on next logon. No public exploit code is referenced at time of analysis, and exploitation requires the victim to open the file (UI:R). |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 23, 2026
Path traversal in the attachment-handling logic of Foxit PDF Editor and Foxit PDF Reader lets a crafted PDF write an embedded attachment to a directory outside the intended secure area when the document is opened by a local user. The flaw is rated CVSS 3.1 7.8 (AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, CWE-73) and requires the victim to open the malicious file, so it is user-interaction-gated rather than remotely triggerable, and no authentication is required of the attacker (PR:N). The practical consequence is arbitrary file write under the privileges of the Foxit process, which can escalate into code execution only if the attacker manages to land a file in an execution-relevant location such as a startup or autorun path; no public exploit code and no confirmed active exploitation were identified at time of analysis, and EPSS data was not provided.
RemediationAI
Apply the fixed Foxit build published for your product track; the vendor's security bulletins page (https://www.foxit.com/support/security-bulletins.html) is the source of record, and because the supplied data does not include an exact patched version number, confirm the correct Foxit PDF Editor and Foxit PDF Reader build there rather than relying on a version cited elsewhere, then use Foxit's built-in updater or reinstall from the official download. Until you can patch, reduce exposure by disabling or restricting automatic handling and opening of file attachments and embedded files in Foxit (Preferences > Trust Manager / JavaScript and attachment settings), which stops the vulnerable extraction path from being reached at the cost of breaking legitimate workflows that depend on embedded files; enable Protected View / Safe Reading Mode so untrusted documents are parsed in a confined state; and run Foxit under a low-privilege account or in an OS-level sandbox (for example Windows Defender Application Guard or a restricted AppContainer), which limits where a traversal write can land but may break integrations that need filesystem or shell access. Additional compensating controls with explicit trade-offs: strip PDF attachments at the email gateway or file-share ingress so crafted documents never reach a reader, accepting that this blocks all attachment use cases; and apply EDR/application-control rules that alert on the Foxit process writing outside its expected temporary and document directories, which can generate false positives for legitimate save paths. Do not rely on document-level trust prompts alone, since the write occurs as part of opening the file.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The issue lives in Foxit's PDF embedded-file (attachment) subsystem. A PDF can carry attachments through the /EmbeddedFiles name tree, and each attachment is described by a /Filespec dictionary whose /F or /UF string supplies the file name the reader uses on disk. Foxit is expected to normalize that string and confine the extracted file to a per-document or otherwise sandboxed secure directory, but it fails to strip or reject traversal sequences (for example ../ or ..\ and, on Windows, absolute or drive-relative paths) in the supplied name. That is the classic CWE-73 pattern: externally controlled file name or path combined with an unchecked write sink, which the input also characterizes as path traversal. Because the write is performed locally with the privileges of the user who opened the document, the security boundary that is crossed is the application's storage confinement; reaching code execution additionally depends on whether the targeted directory is one the operating system or a running application will execute from or trust. The affected CPEs are cpe:2.3:a:foxit_software_inc.:foxit_pdf_editor:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* and cpe:2.3:a:foxit_software_inc.:foxit_pdf_reader:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, i.e. the flag is set at the product level rather than pinned to a specific build in the supplied data.

DescriptionCVE.org
Foxit PDF Editor/Reader failed to validate the directory traversal path in the attachment file name, resulting in malicious attachments being able to be written to directories outside the expected secure area when the PDF is opened.
Zero Day Initiative Advisories
Executive ViewAI
Foxit PDF Editor and Foxit PDF Reader are affected by a high-severity path traversal vulnerability (CVE-2026-91797) that allows a crafted PDF to write arbitrary files to a user's system when opened, potentially enabling code execution if the file is placed in an execution-relevant location. No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis, and no public exploit identified at time of analysis, but organizations should act to mitigate risk to endpoints. Leadership should prioritize this due to the widespread use of these products and the potential for local code execution, which could lead to data compromise or system takeover.
Disable attachment handling in Foxit, block PDF attachments from external sources, enforce least privilege, monitor for file writes to startup folders, and use application allowlisting.
