Availability-only JVM OOM from unauthenticated malformed input; CVSS 3.1 lacks an attack-requirement metric, so the DataInput-path precondition can't be encoded here and is captured in 4.0 AT:P.

UTF8DataInputJsonParser._reportInvalidToken() in FasterXML jackson-core builds the offending-token text for its error message by appending Java identifier characters to a StringBuilder in a loop that has no upper bound. Unlike the three sibling parser implementations, including UTF8StreamJsonParser, it never consults ErrorReportConfiguration.getMaxErrorTokenLength() (default 256). A malformed token supplied to a parser created through JsonFactory.createParser(DataInput) is therefore accumulated in full. No StreamReadConstraints setting mitigates this: maxDocumentLength cannot be applied to DataInput sources at all, and maxStringLength does not cover this path because the accumulation bypasses ReadConstrainedTextBuffer. The reporter measured a 20,000,109-character exception message from a 20-million-character malformed token on the DataInput path, against 367 characters for identical input on the InputStream path. Scaling the payload drives the StringBuilder, which also incurs byte-to-char expansion and internal array doubling, to many times the raw payload size and can trigger OutOfMemoryError for the whole JVM. UTF8DataInputJsonParser was introduced in 2.8.0 together with createParser(DataInput); releases before 2.8.0 do not contain the affected class.

AnalysisAI
Denial of service in FasterXML jackson-core 2.8.0 and later: an unauthenticated remote attacker who can supply a malformed JSON token to a parser created via JsonFactory.createParser(DataInput) causes UTF8DataInputJsonParser._reportInvalidToken() to accumulate the entire offending token into an exception message without ever applying ErrorReportConfiguration.getMaxErrorTokenLength(). The reporter measured a 20,000,109-character exception message from a 20-million-character malformed token (versus 367 characters for identical input on the InputStream path), and because the StringBuilder also incurs byte-to-char expansion and internal array doubling, scaling the payload can exhaust heap and trigger a JVM-wide OutOfMemoryError. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation is limited to applications that create their parser via JsonFactory.createParser(DataInput) - the ONLY code path using the vulnerable UTF8DataInputJsonParser. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The vendor/HeroDevs CVSS of 7.5 (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H) captures the theoretical worst case - an unauthenticated network attacker sending a malformed token to force a JVM-wide OutOfMemoryError - but overstates real-world risk because it does not reflect the narrow reachability of the flaw. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Vendor patch available: the fix is upstream fix (PR/commit) in FasterXML jackson-core pull request #1698, which restores the maxErrorTokenLength bound in UTF8DataInputJsonParser; released patched version not independently confirmed, so validate the exact Jackson 2.x release containing #1698 against the GHSA-7hhh-6rmp-j9qf advisory and release notes before deploying. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours, inventory all applications using FasterXML jackson-core 2.8.0 or later and identify any code paths that call JsonFactory.createParser(DataInput); apply vendor patch per advisory for jackson-core (upgrade to the vendor-fixed release specified in the advisory) or, if patching cannot be completed immediately, isolate or rate-limit those endpoints and add strict JSON payload size limits at the edge. …
