| Exploitation Conditions | Requires network reachability to an RTI Connext Professional DDS domain running the affected Core Libraries (7.4.0 before 7.7.0.1, or 7.0.0 before 7.3.1.6) and the ability to deliver a crafted DDS/RTPS message that reaches the vulnerable parsing path. Per the CVSS vector no authentication (PR:N) or user interaction (UI:N) is needed. Practical exposure is LIMITED by the fact that DDS middleware is typically deployed on segmented or private operational networks (robotics, autonomous systems, defense/aerospace) rather than directly on the internet, and the flaw yields only partial integrity/availability impact rather than code execution. |
| Impact | The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) describes an unauthenticated, network-reachable, low-complexity flaw, but the impact metrics are the story: VC:N/VI:L/VA:L means no confidentiality loss and only PARTIAL integrity and availability impact, yielding a moderate 6.9 (MEDIUM). This is a materially lower-severity issue than several of its RTI Connext siblings (e.g. the 10.0 stack-overflow RCE CVE-2026-7866 or the heap-overflow CVE-2026-18457 with full I:H/A:H), and the CWE-193 off-by-one out-of-bounds write here appears to corrupt a bounded amount of adjacent memory rather than enabling reliable code execution or a hard crash. There is NO EPSS score, NO CISA KEV listing, and NO public POC in the provided data - exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The single reference is RTI's own self-published advisory page, so all details are vendor-self-reported and not independently corroborated by NVD analysis or third parties. Realistically this is a lower-priority patch item than the critical siblings: the network vector plus PR:N keeps it on the radar for exposed DDS deployments, but the bounded low-impact write and absence of any exploitation signal argue against emergency treatment. Note the impact ceiling should be verified with RTI - an off-by-one OOB write can sometimes be leveraged beyond the vendor's VI:L/VA:L rating. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker with network reachability to a Connext Professional DDS domain sends a crafted DDS/RTPS message whose length or index field triggers the off-by-one in a Core Libraries parsing routine, writing one or a few bytes past a buffer boundary. This corrupts adjacent memory, producing limited data integrity effects or partial service disruption in the middleware. No public exploit code is available and no active exploitation has been reported. |

An off-by-one error in the RTI Connext Professional Core Libraries (CWE-193) produces an out-of-bounds write that can overflow a buffer when a crafted DDS/RTPS message is parsed, affecting Connext Professional 7.4.0 up to (but not including) 7.7.0.1 and 7.0.0 up to (but not including) 7.3.1.6. Per the CVSS 4.0 vector the flaw is remotely reachable over the network with low complexity and requires no authentication and no user interaction, but impact is bounded: there is no confidentiality loss (VC:N) and only partial integrity and availability impact (VI:L/VA:L), giving a medium-severity 6.9 rather than a code-execution-class outcome. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and the issue is not in CISA KEV; practical exposure is further limited because DDS middleware is normally deployed on segmented operational networks in robotics, autonomous systems, and aerospace/defense environments rather than being directly internet-facing.
RemediationAI
Upgrade RTI Connext Professional to a fixed release: 7.7.0.1 or later for the 7.4.x/7.6.x line, or 7.3.1.6 or later for the 7.0.x-7.3.x line (vendor-released patch versions per the RTI advisory at https://www.rti.com/vulnerabilities/#cve-2026-18460). Where upgrading immediately is not possible, the highest-value compensating control is network segmentation - keep DDS domains off untrusted or internet-reachable segments and restrict who can join the domain, since the attacker must reach the DDS/RTPS parsing path; the trade-off is that DDS is discovery- and multicast-heavy, so host firewalls and VLAN boundaries must be tuned carefully or legitimate participant discovery and topic traffic will break. Deploying DDS Security (authentication, access control, and encrypted RTPS traffic) raises the bar by rejecting unauthenticated participants before their messages reach the vulnerable parser, at the cost of PKI setup, per-topic governance configuration, and some added latency and CPU overhead. Because the impact is an in-memory overwrite in a parsing path, enabling available memory-protection/compiler hardening options on builds that support them provides only secondary defense, and any deployment in which an attacker has already been able to inject into the DDS domain should be treated as potentially compromised pending message-log review.

Technical ContextAI · show details
RTI Connext Professional is a commercial implementation of the OMG Data Distribution Service (DDS) standard, using the RTPS wire protocol to exchange typed data between publishers and subscribers across a domain. The affected component is the Core Libraries, which handle wire-level message parsing and buffer management. The root cause is CWE-193, an off-by-one error, which in this context means a size or index calculation is wrong by one, so a write lands one element past the end of an allocated buffer and produces an out-of-bounds write / buffer overflow (the vendor tags this as a Buffer Overflow class issue). Because the vulnerable code path sits in the DDS/RTPS receive and parse pipeline, a malformed message delivered onto a reachable DDS domain can trigger the overwrite. CPE data (cpe:2.3:a:rti:connext_professional) confirms the affected product, with the vendor-specified vulnerable ranges 7.4.0 < 7.7.0.1 and 7.0.0 < 7.3.1.6; no authentication is indicated by the PR:N metric, but the attacker must still have network reachability into the DDS domain. An off-by-one heap or buffer overwrite of this kind is typically latent and can be shaped into memory corruption, so the partial integrity/availability impact assessed here (VI:L/VA:L, no confidentiality loss) should be read as the confirmed consequence rather than a ceiling guarantee in every deployment.

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.
