Untrusted log producer needs no auth (PR:N); arbitrary file overwrite crosses out of Vector's intended directory into the OS (S:C), giving high integrity/availability impact but no direct read (C:N).

Vector is a high-performance observability data pipeline. From 0.10.0 until 0.57.0, the file sink renders its templated path from event fields and opens the result without confining it to an intended directory. When an untrusted source supplies an event field used by the path template, the value can contain an absolute path or parent-directory traversal, causing Vector to create parent directories and create or overwrite files outside the intended location with the Vector process privileges. The resulting file write can modify sensitive files and can lead to code execution when a scheduled task, authorization file, or subsequently executed script is targeted. This issue is fixed in version 0.57.0.
AnalysisAI
Unconfined template path resolution in the Vector observability pipeline's file sink allows attacker-influenced event data to create or overwrite files anywhere the Vector process has write access, affecting versions 0.10.0 up to but not including 0.57.0. Because the rendered path is opened without confinement to an intended directory, a crafted event field can supply an absolute path or '../' traversal, and Vector will even create the missing parent directories before writing. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Requires a Vector deployment (0.10.0 up to but not including 0.57.0) with a `file` sink whose `path` template interpolates an event field (e.g. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | This is a genuinely high-priority write-primitive-to-RCE flaw, but its real-world risk is strongly configuration-gated rather than universal. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |

| Remediation | Upgrade to the vendor-released patch, Vector 0.57.0 (https://github.com/vectordotdev/vector/releases/tag/v0.57.0, advisory GHSA-6342-xwvw-c637), which adds enforced template confinement and a new file-sink base_dir setting; note this is a breaking change, since templates such as key_prefix: "{{ host }}/" are rejected at startup unless they carry a literal leading segment (migrate to forms like "logs-{{ host }}/"), and any file-sink path template without a usable literal prefix must set base_dir explicitly. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |

Within 24 hours, inventory all Vector instances and identify any running versions between 0.10.0 and 0.57.0; immediately review and disable or restrict file sinks whose path templates incorporate untrusted event fields, and run Vector with the lowest possible privileges. …
