| Exploitation Conditions | Requires only a valid low-privilege authenticated HomeBox account (PR:L) reaching a network-accessible instance running a version prior to 0.26.0; the attacker calls POST /v1/groups/members supplying the target's userID. What LIMITS exploitation: the vulnerable HandleGroupMemberAdd endpoint and route exist only before 0.26.0 (removed by commit ed3216a8), so patched instances are not exploitable; the attacker must know or obtain the target user's userID; and direct impact is capped at disclosing the target's email and name plus forced group enrollment. The higher-impact outcome (inventory wipe) requires additionally chaining the separate cross-group wipe vulnerability. No user interaction by the victim and no owner/admin role are needed. |
| Impact | This is a genuine broken-authorization/broken-workflow flaw (CWE-841) but a moderate-severity one, and the signals are consistent rather than conflicting. The vendor CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N = 5.4) is well-calibrated: exploitation is network-reachable and trivial once you hold any authenticated account, but it requires that low-privilege authentication (PR:L) and yields only low-impact confidentiality (a target user's email and name via the resulting member list) and low-impact integrity (forcibly enrolling a foreign account into your group). There is no availability impact directly. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit are present in the input, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' SSVC framework data was not supplied. The real priority driver is not the direct impact but the chaining note in the description: this membership-forcing bug is the stated prerequisite for a separate cross-group inventory-wipe vulnerability (tracked separately, sibling CVE-2026-48826, fixed in the same commit ed3216a8) which carries I:H/A:H. Treated in isolation this is a low-to-medium real-world risk; treated as a chain enabler it deserves patching alongside the wipe fix. Note the input Tags label this 'Information Disclosure,' which captures the email/name leak but understates the authorization/broken-access-control root cause. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker registers or already holds any ordinary HomeBox account, then sends POST /v1/groups/members with a victim's userID as the payload. The server (pre-0.26.0) enrolls that victim into the attacker's group with no owner check, invitation token, consent, or notification, exposing the victim's email and name in the group member list and establishing the cross-group membership needed to later trigger the separate inventory-wipe flaw. No public proof-of-concept is referenced in the provided data. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 21, 2026
Broken authorization in HomeBox prior to 0.26.0 lets any authenticated low-privilege user force an arbitrary account into their own group by POSTing a victim's userId to /v1/groups/members, with no owner role, invitation token, victim consent, or victim notification required. The direct impact is unauthorized group enrollment plus disclosure of the target's email address and name through the resulting member list (CVSS 5.4, CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N), and the forced membership also satisfies the prerequisite for chaining a separate cross-group inventory-wipe issue. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis and the flaw is not in CISA KEV; the endpoint and handler were removed entirely in the 0.26.0 fix, so patched instances are not exploitable.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to HomeBox 0.26.0 or later - the vendor-released patch version that removes the vulnerable endpoint: deploy the v0.26.0 release (https://github.com/sysadminsmedia/homebox/releases/tag/v0.26.0), which corresponds to commit ed3216a80998dfd81d4418700696244144883160 and vendor advisory GHSA-ffcw-whqh-hgqf. Because the fix deletes the POST /v1/groups/members route entirely rather than adding a role check, upgrading is the only complete remedy; there is no configuration flag that re-enables the endpoint with authorization. If immediate upgrade is not possible, block POST requests to /v1/groups/members at the reverse proxy or API gateway (nginx/Traefik/Caddy rule returning 403) - this is effective with no legitimate clients on that path in patched behavior, but it also removes the only remaining mechanism for adding members, so membership changes must be performed manually in the database until upgrade; alternatively restrict network exposure of the HomeBox instance to trusted networks/VPN, which reduces but does not eliminate the risk from any authenticated user. Additionally, audit current group membership lists for unexpected users, rotate or review any email addresses and names disclosed as a side effect, and prioritize upgrading instances where an attacker could chain this forced-membership primitive with the separate cross-group inventory-wipe issue, since the wipe uses the membership created here as its prerequisite.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is CWE-841 (Improper Enforcement of Behavioral Workflow): HomeBox's group-membership workflow assumed that joining a group always flows through an invitation, but the POST /v1/groups/members route was mounted with only authentication middleware (userMW) and no owner/role check, and GroupService.AddMember wrote the caller-supplied userID directly into the group-membership relation using the caller's group ID (ctx.GID) from the authenticated session. Because the target userID is fully attacker-controlled, the server never validated that the target had been invited, had consented, or was even aware, and no notification was emitted. The fix commit ed3216a80998dfd81d4418700696244144883160 removes the HandleGroupMemberAdd handler, the /groups/members POST route, the GroupMemberAdd request struct, and the GroupService.AddMember method; it also introduces an explicit UserGroup edge entity in the ent ORM (replacing the implicit membership association) and tightens adjacent authorization by replacing the coarse ctx.User.IsOwner flag in HandleWipeInventory with a repository-backed Groups.IsOwnerOf check and by adding GID scoping to maintenance-entry update/delete calls. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:sysadminsmedia:homebox:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, i.e. all builds before 0.26.0 of the self-hostable Go/ent backend.

1DescriptionCVE.org
HomeBox is a home inventory and organization system. Prior to 0.26.0, POST /v1/groups/members invokes HandleGroupMemberAdd and GroupService.AddMember using a caller-supplied userID without requiring an owner role, an invitation token, target-user consent, or target-user notification. Any authenticated user can force another account into the caller's group, disclose the target user's email address and name through the resulting member list, and create the membership prerequisite used by a separate cross-group inventory-wipe vulnerability. This issue is fixed in version 0.26.0.
