Network, unauthenticated confidentiality-only leak of session credentials (C:H, I/A:N), but AC:H because it depends on a shared-cache deployment that retained a credentialed, security-zeroed entry.

3DescriptionCVE.org
http-cache-semantics through 4.2.0 fails to properly validate security-zeroed cache entries when processing client max-stale directives, allowing unauthenticated attackers to retrieve cached responses belonging to other users. Attackers can request the same URL with a large max-stale value to obtain another user's Set-Cookie session credentials from shared-cache entries that were deliberately zeroed for security reasons.
AnalysisAI
Cross-user information disclosure in the http-cache-semantics npm library (through 4.2.0) allows unauthenticated attackers to retrieve cached HTTP responses belonging to other users from a shared cache. By re-requesting an identical URL with a large client-supplied Cache-Control: max-stale directive, an attacker can cause the library to serve cache entries that were deliberately security-zeroed - such as responses carrying Set-Cookie session credentials - instead of suppressing them. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires that http-cache-semantics (through 4.2.0) be used to drive a SHARED cache that has stored a response containing sensitive per-user data such as a Set-Cookie session credential, where that entry was deliberately 'security-zeroed' by the library. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The vendor CVSS 4.0 base score of 8.7 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H, all other impacts N) frames this as a high-severity, network-reachable, unauthenticated confidentiality-only flaw - consistent with CWE-524 (Use of Cache Containing Sensitive Information). … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | No vendor-released patch was identified at time of analysis, and no fixed version number is published in the available references, so remediation must start with compensating controls while tracking https://github.com/kornelski/http-cache-semantics/issues/56 for an upstream release and applying it as soon as a patched version is available (also monitor https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/http-cache-semantics-through-4.2.0-cross-user-cache-disclosure-via-max-stale). … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours, inventory all applications and services that depend on http-cache-semantics at versions through 4.2.0, prioritizing internet-facing systems and any deployment whose architecture places a shared or reverse-proxy cache in front of authenticated content; confirm whether those caches store responses containing Set-Cookie headers. …
