Exploitation Conditions

Requires the target to be running Redis Open Source in cluster mode (cluster-enabled yes) so the cluster bus PING/PONG/MEET packet parser is active, and the attacker must be able to send packets to the node's cluster bus port (typically data-port + 10000) - i.e. presence on the adjacent internal cluster/interconnect network, not the public internet (AV:A). The cluster bus performs no authentication by default (PR:N, UI:N), so any peer able to reach that port can deliver the malformed packet. The specific trigger is a string-carrying extension (CLUSTERMSG_EXT_TYPE_HOSTNAME, HUMAN_NODENAME, or SHARDID) whose data is not null-terminated. Limiting factors: single-node/non-cluster Redis deployments are not exposed, network segmentation of the cluster bus sharply reduces reachability, and affected versions are 7.0.0 through 8.8.1 (fixed in 8.10.0).

Impact

Signals are consistent and point to a moderate, not urgent, priority. The vendor CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:A/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:H, 7.1) is credible: the flaw lives in the Redis cluster bus PING/PONG/MEET packet parser, which is reachable only over the adjacent cluster-interconnect network (AV:A), needs no authentication (the cluster bus has no auth by default), and yields at worst a partial info-leak (C:L) plus a full node crash (A:H). CISA SSVC reinforces the lower urgency: Exploitation=none (no observed activity), Automatable=no, Technical Impact=partial. No EPSS score, no KEV listing, and no public exploit are present - so this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis,' not active exploitation. The main caveat is that the vendor labels this AV:A while some readers may assume network-wide reachability; that is NOT the case - exploitation is confined to hosts that can reach the cluster bus port, which is normally a segmented internal network. Net: a real, patch-worthy memory-safety bug gated behind cluster-mode deployment and adjacent-network access, appropriately mid-tier rather than a drop-everything emergency.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker with a foothold on the internal cluster/interconnect network (a compromised peer node, container, or host in the same segment) crafts a cluster bus PING or MEET packet carrying a string extension (hostname, human node name, or shard-id) whose payload is not null-terminated. When a target Redis node later consumes that field as a C string, it reads out of bounds, either crashing the node (remote DoS) or potentially returning adjacent heap memory. No public exploit code exists, and access is limited to the adjacent cluster network rather than the internet.

AnalysisAIv2 – Sep 17, 2026

Out-of-bounds reads in the Redis Open Source cluster bus packet parser (versions 7.0.0 through 8.8.1) allow an adjacent-network attacker to crash a cluster node or leak small amounts of process memory by sending a crafted PING/PONG/MEET message containing a string-carrying extension that lacks a null terminator. The cluster bus is unauthenticated by default (CVSS PR:N, AV:A), so any peer that can reach a node's cluster bus port can deliver the malformed packet; the behavior is rated CVSS 7.1 with high availability impact and low confidentiality impact. Vendor-released patch: the fix is included in Redis 8.10.0, and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis; non-cluster single-node deployments and Redis Software / Redis Enterprise are not affected.

v1 Sep 17, 2026 - 12:21 CVSS 6.0

Out-of-bounds reads in Redis open source cluster-mode nodes let an attacker positioned on an adjacent network leak process memory and cause a remote denial of service by sending a crafted PING, PONG, or MEET packet on the cluster bus. The flaw is unauthenticated from the bus perspective (CVSS PR:N/UI:N, AV:A) because the cluster bus is a node-to-node channel that does not require client credentials; only instances running in cluster mode with the bus enabled are exposed, and Redis Software / Redis Enterprise are explicitly not affected. Vendor fixes are published (commit 37894faeea11e2db28b9fc2af378a762d2c36523, PR #15263, release 8.10.0), and no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Upgrade Redis Open Source to 8.10.0, the vendor-released patched version referenced in the advisory; the fix is also carried in commit 37894faeea11e2db28b9fc2af378a762d2c36523 (PR 15263) if you build from source. Because the flaw is only reachable through the cluster bus, the most effective compensating control when an upgrade cannot be scheduled immediately is to restrict network access to the cluster bus port (data port + 10000, e.g. 16379 for a node listening on 6379) so that only legitimate cluster peers can reach it - segmenting or firewalling this interconnect traffic to trusted hosts eliminates the attack path entirely, at the cost of having to keep the peer allow-list current as nodes are added or replaced. Disabling cluster mode (cluster-enabled no) on nodes that do not need horizontal scaling removes the vulnerable parser, but is only viable for single-node or non-clustered deployments. Running the cluster bus over a TLS-enabled configuration, where supported, adds transport protection but does not by itself correct the missing null-termination check, and enabling cluster-require-full-coverage or similar flags does not mitigate this issue. Monitor cluster logs for the new messages introduced by the patch ("missing null terminator", "truncated extension", "invalid shard id") as a detection signal on unpatched nodes.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw lives in src/cluster_legacy.c in the clusterProcessPacket() handler that parses cluster bus extension records carried after the 2256-byte CLUSTERMSG_MIN_LEN header. The original code validated only that the extension length was a multiple of 8 bytes and that the total message length was consistent, but never verified that string-carrying extension payloads (CLUSTERMSG_EXT_TYPE_HOSTNAME, CLUSTERMSG_EXT_TYPE_HUMAN_NODENAME, and CLUSTERMSG_EXT_TYPE_SHARDID) were null-terminated. Downstream code (for example auxShardIdGetter() calling strlen() on n->shard_id) then treats the buffer as a C string, walking past the end of the extension data - a classic CWE-125 out-of-bounds read. The upstream patch adds an explicit extlen < sizeof(clusterMsgPingExt) lower bound, a per-type payload length check (datalen == 0 || str[datalen-1] != '\0' for hostname/human nodename), struct-size minimums for forgotten-node and internal-secret extensions, ClusterNodeId validation for shard IDs, and replaces strlen() with strnlen(n->shard_id, CLUSTER_NAMELEN). The accompanying test changes in tests/support/cluster_util.tcl and tests/unit/cluster/hostnames.tcl add builders for extension-bearing PING packets, confirming the attack surface is the cluster interconnect protocol rather than the client protocol.

DescriptionCVE.org

In Redis community the cluster bus PING/PONG/MEET packet parser validated extension padding and total length but never checked that string-carrying extensions are properly null-terminated, allowing a crafted packet to trigger out-of-bounds reads when the payload is later consumed as a C string. This vulnerability can potentially lead to loss of confidentiality or remote denial of service. Redis Software / Redis Enterprise are not affected by this issue.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Organizations using Redis Open Source in clustered configurations face a high-severity availability risk from an unauthenticated adjacent-network flaw that can crash a cluster node and leak small amounts of process memory. Only cluster deployments running versions 7.0.0 through 8.8.1 are affected; non-cluster single-node and Redis Software/Redis Enterprise are not impacted. Although no public exploit identified at time of analysis, the low attack complexity and potential for service disruption warrant immediate remediation to protect critical in-memory data and maintain service uptime.
