Network-reachable REST API with a deterministic traversal (AC:L), requires an authenticated operator (PR:L), no user interaction, and arbitrary file write leading to code execution on the C2 host (C/I/A:H).

3DescriptionCVE.org
BC Security Empire before 6.7.1 fails to validate the multipart filename parameter in upload endpoints, allowing authenticated operators to write files to arbitrary paths on the C2 server. Attackers can use path traversal sequences in the filename to bypass directory containment and write malicious files to sensitive locations for code execution.
AnalysisAI
BC Security Empire before 6.7.1 is affected by an authenticated path traversal vulnerability in its multipart file upload flow; an operator with a valid Empire session can place a traversal sequence in the uploaded filename and write files outside the intended downloads directory on the C2 server, potentially achieving code execution. The issue is fixed in 6.7.1, which validates filenames and resolves upload paths safely; no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and CVSS 4.0 rates it 8.7 (assessed CVSS 3.1 8.8) with high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Requires an authenticated Empire operator session (PR:L) with network access to the C2 REST API; the attacker submits a multipart file upload to POST /api/v2/users/{uid}/avatar or POST /api/v2/downloads/ with a path-traversal sequence in the multipart filename parameter. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (8.7, AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H) describes an authenticated network-reachable path traversal that yields file-write-to-RCE on the Empire C2 server. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Upgrade to BC Security Empire 6.7.1 or later; the vendor-released patch is 6.7.1, available from the v6.7.1 release at https://github.com/BC-SECURITY/Empire/releases/tag/v6.7.1, and the fix commit is https://github.com/BC-SECURITY/Empire/commit/c33a626316cb20bc8ed707e03a22d324d5d4762a (details in https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/bc-security-empire-before-6.7.1-path-traversal-file-upload-rce). … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours, inventory all BC Security Empire deployments and identify any instances running versions before 6.7.1; Vendor-released patch: 6.7.1 is available and should be applied immediately, and if patching cannot be completed, isolate the C2 REST API from untrusted networks and restrict access to known operator IPs. …
