CRITICAL 9.2

DescriptionCVE.org

atomic-agents-stack before 1.1.0 accepts cleartext HTTP schemes in the HTTP MCP server-registry backend factory, allowing network man-in-the-middle attackers to rewrite catalog responses. Attackers can inject arbitrary command and argument values that are spawned as local subprocesses by MCPClientPool to achieve code execution on the agent host.

AnalysisAI

Code execution on the agent host is achievable in atomic-agents-stack through version 1.0.0 because the HTTP MCP server-registry backend factory accepts cleartext http:// catalog URLs alongside https://, letting a network man-in-the-middle rewrite catalog responses and inject arbitrary command/args values that MCPClientPool subsequently spawns as local subprocesses. The flaw is genuine but conditional and its real-world risk is materially lower than the 9.2 CVSS 4.0 headline suggests: exploitation requires an operator to have configured a cleartext http catalog URL (a deployment choice, not a default-reachable condition), an active man-in-the-middle position on the path to that catalog server, and no operator-authored allowlist (mcp_allow_fn defaults to None); the https:// path is not vulnerable because httpx verifies certificates and does not follow redirects. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Requires ALL of: (1) an operator configuring the HTTP MCP server-registry backend with a cleartext http:// catalog URL rather than https:// (the factory accepts both schemes, so this is a deployment choice); (2) an active network man-in-the-middle position on the path to that catalog server, enabling response rewriting (this is the AT:P/AC:H limiter - passive eavesdropping is insufficient); and (3) no operator-authored command allowlist, which is the default since mcp_allow_fn defaults to None. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment This is a genuine but conditional code-execution flaw whose real-world risk is materially lower than the 9.2 CVSS 4.0 headline suggests. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Vendor-released patch: 1.1.0, which requires https by default and gates http:// catalogs behind a loud explicit opt-in; upgrade atomic-agents-stack to 1.1.0 or later per the GitHub advisory at https://github.com/dep0we/atomic-agents-stack/security/advisories/GHSA-xhcr-cqfr-m3hv (corroborated at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/atomic-agents-stack-before-1.1.0-remote-code-execution-via-http-mcp). … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, identify all deployments of atomic-agents-stack version 1.0.0 and verify whether any are configured to use cleartext HTTP catalog URLs; if so, immediately switch to HTTPS or disable the catalog feature until patching is possible. …
