Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires two concurrent conditions: (1) the target site must be running User Registration & Membership plugin version 5.0 through 5.2.7, AND (2) the site administrator must have explicitly added one or more 'user smart tag' placeholders to the membership confirmation page's configurable message - a non-default configuration that is NOT present in the plugin's shipped defaults. Without smart tags on that page, the IDOR exists structurally but no sensitive user data is rendered or returned. The attacker also needs knowledge of a valid target username or user ID, which can be enumerated through standard WordPress discovery techniques (REST API, author archives). No authentication is required by the attacker; no user interaction from the victim is needed. Exploitation is limited to information disclosure only - no integrity or availability impact is possible through this vector.

Impact

The provided CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N = 3.7) is well-calibrated for this vulnerability. The AC:H metric is justified by the non-default exploitation prerequisite: smart tags must be explicitly placed on the confirmation page by a site administrator, which the plugin does not do in its shipped default configuration. Without smart tags, the page discloses no sensitive fields regardless of the IDOR. The confidentiality impact is low-to-moderate - email and profile fields are recoverable, but credentials and payment instruments are not described as exposed. EPSS data was not provided, but the low CVSS score and high attack complexity condition the real-world risk significantly. A publicly available WPScan proof-of-concept raises discoverability, but the gate condition (smart tags configured) substantially limits the realistic exposed population. This is not a high-priority emergency for most sites, but sites using smart tags on confirmation pages with sensitive profile fields face meaningful user privacy risk.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker enumerates a target WordPress site's usernames (via the WordPress REST API or login error messages), then crafts a GET request to the membership confirmation page appending the victim's username or user ID as a query parameter. If the site admin has added user smart tags (e.g., email address or custom profile fields) to that page's template, the server renders and returns the victim's personal data without verifying the requester has any relationship to that account. A publicly available proof-of-concept from WPScan confirms the technique is documented and reproducible.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 13, 2026

Unauthenticated information disclosure in the User Registration & Membership WordPress plugin (versions 5.0 through 5.2.7) exposes arbitrary users' email addresses, profile fields, roles, and membership order details to any visitor. The plugin's membership confirmation page performs no ownership verification - an attacker who supplies another user's identifier in the request receives that user's data if the site operator has configured user smart tags on the page's message template. No public exploit confirmed in CISA KEV, though a publicly available proof-of-concept is documented by WPScan.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: version 5.2.8. Site operators should update the plugin to 5.2.8 or later immediately via the WordPress admin dashboard or WP-CLI. As an interim workaround for sites unable to update promptly, removing any user smart tags (such as email address, profile fields, or membership order tokens) from the membership confirmation page's configurable message template will eliminate the data exposure surface, since unexpanded pages disclose no sensitive data. Restricting access to the confirmation page URL via web server rules (e.g., IP allowlist) is a secondary control but may break legitimate user flows. Technical ContextAI · show details

The affected component is the membership confirmation page within the 'User Registration & Membership' WordPress plugin (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:unknown:user_registration_&_membership:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*), versions 5.0 through below 5.2.8. The plugin offers configurable 'smart tags' that dynamically inject user-specific data (email, custom profile fields, role, and order metadata) into page templates. The flaw is a broken access control / insecure direct object reference (IDOR) variant classified under CWE-200 (Information Exposure): the server renders user-specific smart tag values without validating that the requesting visitor is the named account holder, has completed a registration workflow, or holds any session for that account.

DescriptionCVE.org

The User Registration & Membership WordPress plugin before 5.2.8 does not verify that the visitor requesting its membership confirmation page owns the account named in the request, nor that any registration or purchase has taken place, allowing unauthenticated users to retrieve another user's email address, profile fields, role and membership order details. Exploitation requires the site owner to have added a user smart tag to that page's configurable message, which the shipped default does not contain.
