Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires three concurrent conditions: (1) the attacker must have the ability to populate the source object store with objects whose keys contain raw .. segments - possible only via native cloud-API tooling, not via rclone itself which encodes dots; (2) the victim must use rclone to perform a copy or sync operation from that attacker-influenced source to one of the 13 affected destination backends (b2, swift, qingstor, oracleobjectstorage, internetarchive, smb, storj, sftp, webdav, ftp, filelu, shade, or sia); and (3) the victim's destination credential must have write permissions to paths above the configured rclone root. Exploitation is constrained by UI:R (victim must initiate rclone) and AC:H (attacker must pre-stage malicious keys in the source store). The vulnerability enables write-outside-root only, not read-outside-root - there is no confidentiality impact. Default rclone-to-rclone sync workflows are unaffected because rclone never creates ..-keyed objects in a source store.

Impact

The CVSS 5.3 score (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:N) accurately reflects the attack complexity: the attacker must first populate a source object store with ..-keyed objects via non-rclone tooling, and the victim must then initiate a rclone copy or sync from that source - making this a multi-step, victim-triggered attack rather than an opportunistic one. The I:H rating is appropriate because successful exploitation writes files to arbitrary locations reachable by the victim's storage credential, while C:N is correct because there is no read-escape component. EPSS data is absent from the provided input; given the AC:H/UI:R prerequisites, real-world exploitation probability is likely low. No KEV listing and no public exploit code have been identified, further supporting a measured response. The risk is most meaningful in environments where rclone ingests data from third-party or shared object stores - even a mid-sized municipal IT team in gliwice that automates rclone pulls from provider-controlled buckets should treat this as worth patching given the simplicity of the v1.75.1 upgrade path. The sftp and smb backend scenarios carry elevated real-world impact because a write-outside-root primitive on an sftp destination could overwrite SSH authorized_keys or equivalent sensitive files.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker with write access to a shared or third-party S3-compatible bucket uploads objects with keys such as ../sibling-bucket/payload.sh using the S3 API directly. When a victim's automated rclone sync job pulls from that bucket to an sftp destination, rclone lists the malicious key, passes ../sibling-bucket/payload.sh to the sftp backend's path.Join call, and writes the file one level above the configured sftp root - potentially to a home directory, cron directory, or SSH configuration path accessible under the victim's sftp credential. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 10, 2026

Path traversal in rclone prior to 1.75.1 allows an attacker who can populate a source object store with raw .. key segments to cause rclone to write files outside the configured destination root when a victim performs a copy or sync operation. Thirteen destination backends - including b2, swift, sftp, smb, webdav, ftp, storj, and others - are affected because they apply path.Join(root, remote) on unvalidated object keys before EncodeDot can neutralize parent-directory segments; sftp and smb destinations carry the highest impact since they can reach other filesystem paths or shares accessible under the victim's credential. No public exploit code has been identified and the issue is fixed in v1.75.1.

RemediationAI

Upgrade rclone to v1.75.1 or later, which adds root-escape filtering via RemoteEscapesRoot() and RemoveEscaping() in fs/list/list.go and a parallel guard in StatJSON(), preventing any listing entry with a parent-directory-traversing Remote() value from being acted upon. The release is at https://github.com/rclone/rclone/releases/tag/v1.75.1 and the patch commit is https://github.com/rclone/rclone/commit/57842c5ee4e1407eda06a414a36510cce2db4252. If immediate upgrade is not feasible, restrict rclone to sources you fully control - specifically avoid running rclone copy or sync from any object store populated by third-party or non-rclone tooling. For sftp and smb destinations, tightening the destination credential's scope (e.g., sftp chroot jails, smb share-level read/write restrictions to a named subdirectory) reduces the blast radius of any successful traversal. These workarounds do not eliminate the underlying flaw and should be treated as temporary.

Technical ContextAI · show details

rclone (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:rclone:rclone:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) is a cross-platform command-line tool that syncs files to and from over 70 cloud storage backends. The root cause (CWE-22: Path Traversal) lies in fs/list/list.go: the listing pipeline used by fs/list, fs/walk, fs/sync, and fs/operations passes Object.Remote() values directly to destination backends without validating that the key does not contain parent-directory traversal segments. Flat-keyspace object stores permit arbitrary key strings - including raw .. characters - when populated via native cloud APIs rather than rclone itself. Destination backends then construct the final write path as path.Join(root, remote); when remote contains .., Go's path.Join resolves the traversal before EncodeDot has a chance to sanitize it. The fix in v1.75.1 adds RemoteEscapesRoot() and RemoveEscaping() in fs/list/list.go to filter any listing entry whose Remote() would escape the configured root, and adds a parallel guard in StatJSON() which bypasses the normal listing pipeline.

DescriptionCVE.org

rclone is a command-line program to sync files and directories to and from different cloud storage providers. Prior to 1.75.1, rclone core does not reject parent-directory segments in source Object.Remote() values before fs/list, fs/walk, fs/sync, and fs/operations pass those values to destination backends. A flat-keyspace source object store populated with native non-rclone tooling can contain a raw .. key segment, and affected b2, swift, qingstor, oracleobjectstorage, internetarchive, smb, storj, sftp, webdav, ftp, filelu, shade, and sia destinations use path.Join(root, remote) before EncodeDot can neutralize the segment. A copy or upload can therefore escape the configured root into another bucket, share, or path reachable by the victim credential, with sftp and smb potentially reaching other filesystem or share locations under the same login authority. This issue is fixed in version 1.75.1.
