Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the target server to be running in offline authentication mode, which accepts self-signed JWT certificate chains without Xbox Live verification - this is the default for many community and LAN servers. The attacker must be able to reach the server's Minecraft Bedrock network port (default UDP 19132). No credentials, active session, or prior player registration are needed. Exploitation is not possible against online-mode servers (Xbox Live authentication), as those route through a different certificate validation code path unaffected by this flaw. No non-default feature enablement is required beyond the server simply accepting offline logins.

Impact

The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VA:H, score 8.7) accurately characterizes this as a trivially exploitable, zero-barrier denial-of-service. No authentication, no special privileges, and no user interaction are required; any client reachable to the server's Bedrock UDP port can trigger the crash with a single malformed packet. The public PoC referenced in GHSA-g2fj-p69p-9chp significantly elevates practical risk for unpatched deployments, as the attack is immediately reproducible by unskilled actors. The impact is bounded to availability - the CVSS VC:N/VI:N confirm no confidentiality or integrity exposure. EPSS data was not provided; however, given the zero-complexity exploitation path and public PoC, real-world exploitation of exposed servers is likely. CISA KEV listing is not confirmed. The risk is particularly acute for public gaming servers that rely on PocketMine-MP uptime for player services.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker sends a LoginPacket to a PocketMine-MP server running in offline mode, with the Certificate field set to a JSON payload that, when mapped to a LegacyAuthChain object, leaves internal properties uninitialized. The server's handleLogin() method proceeds to access those uninitialized properties, triggering a fatal PHP error that crashes the entire server process. Because a public PoC is referenced in the GHSA advisory, this requires minimal tooling and can be repeated to keep the server in a perpetual crash loop.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 09, 2026

Unauthenticated remote denial-of-service in PocketMine-MP before 5.43.1 allows any network client to crash the Minecraft Bedrock server by sending a malformed Certificate field during offline login. The LoginPacketHandler fails to validate the Certificate JSON structure before mapping it to an internal auth chain object, leaving PHP class properties uninitialized and triggering a fatal error that terminates the server process. A publicly available proof-of-concept is referenced in the vendor's GitHub Security Advisory (GHSA-g2fj-p69p-9chp); no CISA KEV listing is confirmed at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Upgrade PocketMine-MP to version 5.43.1 or later - this is the vendor-released patch that resolves the Certificate validation flaw. The fix is available via the official repository and the vendor advisory at https://github.com/pmmp/PocketMine-MP/security/advisories/GHSA-g2fj-p69p-9chp. If immediate patching is operationally infeasible, switching the server to online mode (Xbox Live authentication) bypasses the vulnerable self-signed certificate code path entirely; this trades off accessibility for non-Microsoft-account players and is a significant gameplay policy change for community servers. Restricting the Bedrock UDP port (default 19132) to allowlisted source IPs via network firewall can limit exposure for private or whitelist-only servers, but is impractical for public-facing deployments. There are no other code-level workarounds that address the root cause without the patch.

Technical ContextAI · show details

PocketMine-MP (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:pmmp:pocketmine-mp:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) is a PHP-based Minecraft Bedrock Edition server. Login authentication relies on JWT-based certificate chains: online mode uses Xbox Live-signed chains, while offline mode accepts self-signed chains. The vulnerable code path is in src/network/mcpe/handler/LoginPacketHandler.php, where handleLogin() decoded the Certificate field from the incoming LoginPacket as JSON and passed it directly to a JSON object mapper targeting a LegacyAuthChain class. CWE-184 (Incomplete List of Disallowed Inputs) reflects that the input validation logic did not account for malformed or incomplete Certificate payloads, allowing the mapper to produce an object with uninitialized properties whose subsequent access caused a fatal PHP error. The fix, delivered in commits e4aaef4 and 8c75a1d, refactors the auth pipeline to introduce a SelfSignedJwtBody type and a validateSelfSignedAuthToken() method, also bumping the pocketmine/bedrock-protocol dependency from 57.0.0 to 57.1.0+bedrock-1.26.20.
