Exploitation Conditions

No authentication, configuration change, or special client state is required: any host that can reach the server's Bedrock network port (default UDP 19132) can send a pre-authentication LoginPacket. The vulnerability is triggered by the default permissive JsonMapper configuration active in all versions before 5.42.1, which was deliberately enabled to accommodate undocumented clientData JWT fields that Microsoft introduces between Bedrock client versions. Exploitation is limited to performance degradation and log flooding; it does not achieve code execution, data disclosure, or a hard crash. Servers not exposed to untrusted networks - such as private LAN-only or allowlist-restricted deployments with firewall rules blocking external access to UDP 19132 - are not practically at risk.

Impact

The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VA:L) scores 6.9, reflecting no authentication requirement and no confidentiality or integrity impact, with only low availability degradation. Real-world risk is moderate but practically relevant for operators of public Bedrock servers: the attack is trivially automatable since it requires only the ability to reach the game port and send a login-phase packet before any session authentication occurs. The publicly available proof-of-concept in GHSA-xp4f-g2cm-rhg7 further lowers the skill threshold for exploitation. EPSS data is absent from the available intelligence and the vulnerability does not appear in CISA KEV, indicating no confirmed widespread exploitation campaign. The impact is bounded - servers continue running, and the effect is performance degradation and log flooding rather than crash or persistent outage - so even a mid-sized Minecraft network operator in gliwice managing several public Bedrock server instances should treat patching as important but not emergency-priority, particularly since the 5.42.1 fix is targeted and straightforward to deploy.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An unauthenticated remote attacker crafts a Bedrock Edition LoginPacket whose clientData JWT contains hundreds or thousands of fabricated JSON property names alongside the legitimate fields and transmits it to the server's Bedrock UDP port before any session is established. For each unexpected property, PocketMine-MP writes a formatted warning log entry and performs reflection to obtain the class name, driving sustained CPU and I/O load. Repeated delivery of such packets degrades server responsiveness for legitimate players; a public proof-of-concept on GitHub confirms the attack is straightforward to reproduce.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 09, 2026

Remote denial-of-service in PocketMine-MP before 5.42.1 allows unauthenticated network attackers to degrade server performance by sending LoginPackets whose clientData JWT bodies contain large numbers of arbitrary junk properties. The server's JsonMapper iterates over and logs a warning for every unexpected property, enabling log flooding and unbounded CPU waste with no authentication required. A publicly available proof-of-concept exists via the vendor's own GitHub security advisory; no active exploitation in the CISA KEV has been reported.

RemediationAI

Upgrade PocketMine-MP to version 5.42.1 or later; this is the vendor-confirmed fix, implemented in commit c1d4a813fb8c21bfd8b9affd040da864b794df71, which limits the number of tolerated unknown JWT properties to 10 and rejects the LoginPacket by throwing a PacketHandlingException when this threshold is exceeded. The vendor advisory is available at https://github.com/pmmp/PocketMine-MP/security/advisories/GHSA-xp4f-g2cm-rhg7. As a plugin-based workaround before patching, server operators can intercept DataPacketReceiveEvent to capture LoginPacket objects and re-process the clientData JWT using JsonMapper with bExceptionOnUndefinedProperty set to true, causing a JsonMapper_Exception on malformed input. This workaround carries a trade-off: if Microsoft adds new undocumented Bedrock JWT fields in a future client update - which has occurred historically - legitimate logins may be rejected until the plugin is updated. The vendor patch is therefore strongly preferred over the workaround.

Technical ContextAI · show details

PocketMine-MP is a PHP-based server implementation for Minecraft: Bedrock Edition, identified by CPE cpe:2.3:a:pmmp:pocketmine-mp. During client login, the server processes a LoginPacket containing a clientData JWT whose body is deserialized into PHP objects via a JsonMapper instance in src/network/mcpe/handler/LoginPacketHandler.php (lines 289-303 and 334-350 in version 5.41.1). JsonMapper was configured in a permissive mode - emitting a logger.warning() per unexpected property rather than rejecting the packet - to tolerate undocumented JWT field additions that Microsoft periodically introduces in new Bedrock clients. CWE-779 (Recording Sensitive Information into Log File) captures the log-flooding dimension: an attacker can inject arbitrarily many fabricated JWT keys, each triggering a warning log write and string-formatting CPU overhead, with no upper bound prior to the fix.

DescriptionCVE.org

PocketMine-MP versions before 5.42.1 contain a denial of service vulnerability in the LoginPacket handler that allows remote attackers to flood warning messages by injecting numerous junk properties into the clientData JWT. Attackers can craft malicious login packets with excessive unknown properties to waste server CPU time and degrade performance.
