Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires two conditions to be met in sequence. First, curl must receive a Set-Cookie header that places a horizontal tab character (ASCII 9, not the standard space) immediately before the Secure keyword - no standards-compliant server emits this format by default, so the triggering server must be malicious, compromised, or severely misconfigured. Second, the same curl instance must subsequently make a plaintext HTTP request to the host and path covered by the cookie's scope; applications that enforce HTTPS exclusively are not exposed even if the Secure flag is dropped from the stored cookie. curl invocations that do not use a cookie jar (i.e., do not store and replay cookies across requests) are completely unaffected. PR:N in the CVSS reflects that no attacker authentication to the curl client is required; the attacker's leverage is server-side control over the Set-Cookie response.

Impact

The vendor-assigned CVSS 7.5 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N) reflects the theoretical maximum - unauthenticated network-accessible exploitation with high confidentiality impact. However, two sequential conditions must coincide for real exploitation: a server that sends a tab-delimited Secure attribute (not produced by any standards-compliant server implementation in its default configuration) and the curl client subsequently making a plaintext HTTP request to the same cookie-scoped host. If an application exclusively uses HTTPS, the dropped Secure flag causes no practical harm. EPSS at 0.22% (12th percentile) corroborates that the security community assesses widespread exploitation as unlikely. The CVE is absent from CISA KEV and no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis. The AC:L vendor score arguably overstates the ease of exploitation; an AC:H assessment better reflects the two-condition dependency. Despite the high CVSS score, this vulnerability is most relevant to applications that use curl's cookie jar against a potentially adversarial server and then downgrade to HTTP on the same host.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker operating a server returns a HTTP response containing Set-Cookie: authtoken=SECRET;\tSecure; HttpOnly to a curl client making an HTTPS request; curl's parser ignores the Secure attribute due to the tab prefix and stores the cookie without the flag. On a subsequent plaintext HTTP request to the same host - for instance, when following a redirect or fetching a resource over HTTP - curl transmits the authtoken cookie in the clear, allowing a network-positioned observer or the malicious server itself to harvest the credential.

AnalysisAIv2 – Sep 08, 2026

Secure-flag stripping in curl 8.13.0 through 8.21.0 allows a server to cause curl to transmit session cookies over unencrypted HTTP by returning a Set-Cookie header that places a horizontal tab character (ASCII 9) instead of a space immediately before the Secure attribute. curl's cookie parser fails to recognise the attribute under this condition, stores the cookie without its Secure constraint, and subsequently includes it in plaintext HTTP requests to the same host. No public exploit code has been identified and EPSS probability is 0.22% (12th percentile), reflecting low observed exploitation activity despite the straightforward triggering mechanism.

Earlier versions of this analysis (1)
v1 Sep 02, 2026 - 12:21

Secure cookie attribute bypass in curl allows the Secure flag on HTTP cookies to be circumvented when a tab character is present in a Set-Cookie header, causing curl to potentially transmit cookies over unencrypted HTTP connections that should be restricted to HTTPS only. The flaw affects the cookie parsing logic in curl/libcurl and is fixed in curl 8.22.0, released September 2, 2026. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, and it does not appear in the CISA KEV catalog.

RemediationAI

Upgrade curl to the first release after 8.21.0 per the official advisory at https://curl.se/docs/CVE-2026-80255.html; the exact patched release version is not independently confirmed from the available data, as the reference to vuln-8.21.0.html is ambiguous regarding whether 8.21.0 is the fix or the last-affected release. Until patching is feasible, enforce HTTPS-only communication in applications by passing --proto =https to the curl CLI or setting CURLOPT_PROTOCOLS_STR to 'https' in libcurl - this prevents curl from making HTTP requests where the stripped-Secure cookie would be transmitted, at the cost of breaking legitimate mixed-protocol flows. Alternatively, audit and enforce server-side Set-Cookie header generation to ensure Secure attributes are space-delimited per RFC 6265, which eliminates the triggering condition at the source. Applications that do not use curl's cookie-jar functionality (i.e., do not store and resend cookies) are unaffected and require no action.

Technical ContextAI · show details

curl's cookie-jar parsing logic does not treat the horizontal tab character (HT, ASCII 9) as legal whitespace preceding cookie attribute keywords such as Secure, even though HTTP header conventions and RFC 6265 permit optional whitespace - including tabs - following semicolons within Set-Cookie values. When a server returns Set-Cookie: session=TOKEN;\tSecure, curl fails to match the Secure token because the leading tab is not stripped before attribute comparison, causing the attribute to be silently ignored rather than applied. CWE-201 (Insertion of Sensitive Information Into Sent Data) accurately captures the downstream consequence: a cookie intended to be HTTPS-only is stored without that restriction and subsequently emitted in cleartext. The vulnerability was disclosed on the oss-security list (seclists.org/oss-sec/2026/q3/637) and confirmed by curl's own advisory at curl.se/docs/CVE-2026-80255.html. Affected versions confirmed by EUVD-2026-72151 span curl 8.13.0, 8.14.0, 8.14.1, 8.15.0, 8.16.0, 8.17.0, 8.18.0, 8.19.0, 8.20.0, and 8.21.0.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A flaw in curl versions 8.13.0 through 8.21.0 allows attackers to strip Secure flags from session cookies through malformed HTTP headers, causing sensitive session tokens to be transmitted in plaintext. No public exploit identified at time of analysis; however, organizations using affected curl versions face potential session hijacking and account compromise, particularly in development, API, and automation environments.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations include: enforce application-level HTTPS-only traffic policies; implement network controls restricting HTTP communications; deploy WAF rules to detect malformed Set-Cookie headers with unexpected whitespace before security attributes; rotate session tokens proactively; and monitor logs for unusual cookie handling patterns and non-standard Set-Cookie responses.
