2DescriptionCVE.org
Unidata netcdf-c through 4.10.1 contains an out-of-bounds write vulnerability in NC4_HDF5_inq_attname() that copies HDF5 attribute names into a fixed 256-byte buffer without length validation. Attackers can craft HDF5 files with oversized attribute names to overflow the destination buffer, causing memory corruption and crashes when applications enumerate attribute names.
AnalysisAI
Out-of-bounds write in Unidata netcdf-c through 4.10.1 allows an attacker who can supply a crafted HDF5 file to corrupt process memory when the application enumerates HDF5 attribute names. The vulnerable function NC4_HDF5_inq_attname() in libhdf5/hdf5attr.c blindly copies HDF5-returned attribute names into a fixed 256-byte destination buffer without validating the source length, a classic CWE-787 stack/heap corruption sink. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | The application must use the netcdf-c HDF5 storage backend (the NC4/HDF5 code path must be compiled in and invoked) and must call attribute-enumeration functions (nc_inq_attname or equivalent) on a file provided by or influenced by the attacker. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P) accurately captures the file-based delivery model: an attacker needs no privileges and faces no special configuration requirements, but a user or automated pipeline must open and process the crafted HDF5 file. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | No vendor-released patch version has been identified at time of analysis - the references point only to the upstream repository and the VulnCheck advisory without citing a fixed release. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
