Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires a valid Elasticsearch session authenticated with the machine_learning_admin role, or a custom role granting the cluster:admin/xpack/ml/trained_models/put privilege (or equivalent trained-model write access). The ML feature must be enabled on the cluster (xpack.ml.enabled: true, which is the default in licensed Elasticsearch subscriptions including Elastic Cloud). Standard Elasticsearch roles such as read, viewer, kibana_user, or ingest-only roles do not grant the necessary privileges and cannot trigger this vulnerability. Exploitation is also limited to deployments on the licensed Elastic Stack (Basic license tier and above); trial and free-tier configurations with ML disabled are not affected. The attacker must be able to reach the Elasticsearch REST API (typically TCP/9200 or TCP/9243 on Elastic Cloud).

Impact

The CVSS 8.8 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) correctly captures the network-accessible attack surface and full CIA impact, but PR:L warrants careful interpretation: exploitation requires not merely any authenticated Elasticsearch user, but one holding the machine_learning_admin role or an equivalent custom role with trained-model write permissions - a meaningfully narrowed attacker pool compared to generic PR:L. In practice, ML model deployment rights are granted to data-science pipelines and MLOps service accounts, expanding the risk to credential compromise or insider threat vectors. No EPSS score was provided in the input; KEV status is absent, and no public exploit has been identified, which lowers the immediate exploitation probability. However, Elasticsearch is widely deployed in enterprise analytics and AI/ML infrastructure, and the full host-level code execution impact (C:H/I:H/A:H) means a successful exploit on a multi-tenant or cloud-hosted cluster carries significant blast radius. The AC:L rating reflects that, once proper credentials are in hand, the exploit path - upload crafted artifact, deploy model, trigger deserialization - is straightforward with no race conditions or environmental guesswork required.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who has compromised an MLOps service account holding the machine_learning_admin role, or an insider with model deployment rights, crafts a malicious serialized Java object payload embedded within a model artifact and uploads it via PUT /_ml/trained_models/{model_id}. Upon deploying the model to an inference endpoint, the Elasticsearch ML subsystem deserializes the artifact, triggering attacker-controlled code execution within the Elasticsearch JVM process with broad host system-call access - potentially enabling full node compromise, lateral movement within the cluster, or exfiltration of indexed data. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 01, 2026

Remote code execution in Elasticsearch's machine learning component allows an authenticated user with ML model deployment privileges to execute arbitrary attacker-controlled logic on the Elasticsearch host node by supplying a crafted trained model artifact. The flaw stems from unsafe deserialization (CWE-502) of model artifact data during the ML inference loading process, granting the attacker a broader OS system-call surface than the ML subsystem is intended to expose. Elastic has released fixed versions 8.19.2, 9.4.5, and 9.5.1 via ESA-2026-114; no public exploit code or CISA KEV listing has been identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to Elasticsearch 8.19.2, 9.4.5, or 9.5.1 as directed by ESA-2026-114 (https://discuss.elastic.co/t/elasticsearch-8-19-20-9-4-5-9-5-1-security-update-esa-2026-114/390087). If immediate patching is not feasible, disable the ML feature entirely by setting xpack.ml.enabled: false in elasticsearch.yml and restarting each node - this eliminates the attack surface but removes all ML inference and anomaly-detection functionality. As a lighter-weight compensating control, audit Elasticsearch role assignments and strip the machine_learning_admin role and trained-model write privileges from any account that does not strictly require them; limit model deployment rights to dedicated service accounts with tightly scoped API key access. Network-layer ACLs restricting which hosts can reach the Elasticsearch REST API (TCP/9200) provide defense-in-depth but do not mitigate risk from already-authorized internal users or compromised ML service accounts.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Elasticsearch's machine learning subsystem (licensed feature, enabled by default in Elastic Stack deployments) supports importing and deploying trained model artifacts via the PUT /_ml/trained_models API. CWE-502 (Deserialization of Untrusted Data) arises when the ML inference engine deserializes artifact payloads without enforcing strict type-safety controls, enabling CAPEC-586 (Object Injection) - a class of attack where an attacker embeds malicious serialized objects that execute arbitrary code when the deserializer reconstructs them. The description's reference to 'materially broader system-call surface than intended' indicates the injected logic escapes the ML component's expected execution context and runs with the full capabilities of the Elasticsearch JVM process on the underlying host. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:elastic:elasticsearch:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* spans all product editions across the 8.x and 9.x release trains.

DescriptionCVE.org

Deserialization of Untrusted Data (CWE-502) in the Elasticsearch machine learning component can lead to remote code execution via Object Injection (CAPEC-586). A specially crafted trained model artifact could cause attacker-controlled logic to execute with a materially broader system-call surface than intended. Exploitation requires an authenticated user with sufficient privileges to create and deploy trained models.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Elasticsearch deployments with machine learning features are vulnerable to remote code execution (CVE-2026-72649, CVSS 8.8) by authenticated users with model deployment privileges. This threatens organizations' data infrastructure and requires immediate patching, particularly where Elasticsearch processes sensitive data or where access controls may not restrict ML privileges to essential personnel only. The attack surface is limited to authenticated accounts but could expand if credentials are compromised or through insider threats.
