DescriptionCVE.org

The native inference process that Elasticsearch uses to evaluate uploaded machine learning models accepts a model operation that computes a memory address from an offset supplied inside the model, without validating that the offset stays within the bounds of the underlying storage. A user with the privileges required to upload and deploy a trained model can craft a model that reads and writes memory outside the intended allocation. The result is heap corruption that crashes the inference process, and, with sufficient control over the heap layout, could allow arbitrary code execution in the context of that process.

AnalysisAI

Heap corruption and potential remote code execution in Elasticsearch's native ML inference engine can be triggered by any user holding the low-privilege ML model upload and deploy permission. By crafting a model that embeds an operation computing a memory address from an attacker-controlled offset, a low-privileged authenticated user can cause the native inference subprocess to read and write outside its allocated heap, reliably crashing that process or, under controlled heap layout conditions, executing arbitrary code within it. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires the attacker to authenticate to the Elasticsearch cluster and hold the cluster-level manage_ml privilege (or an equivalent ML admin role) specifically granting the ability to upload and deploy trained machine learning models. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The vendor-assigned CVSS 8.8 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) accurately captures the threat profile: the attack reaches the Elasticsearch REST API over the network, requires no special configuration or race condition, and produces full CIA impact within the inference subprocess. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Upgrade Elasticsearch to a patched release as indicated by the vendor advisory ESA-2026-123: version 8.19.20 or later for 8.x deployments, 9.4.5 or later for the 9.4.x branch, or 9.5.1 or later for the 9.5.x branch (https://discuss.elastic.co/t/elasticsearch-8-19-20-9-4-5-9-5-1-security-update-esa-2026-123/389504). … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, audit all Elasticsearch deployments to identify systems with ML features enabled and document which user accounts hold ML model upload or deploy permissions. …
