DescriptionCVE.org

openssl_encrypt before 1.4.9 fails to validate the memory_cost parameter from identity file protection blocks, allowing attackers to trigger out-of-memory conditions during key derivation. Attackers with write access to local identity stores can craft malicious identity files with excessive memory_cost values that cause the host to crash when unlocking identities before authentication.

AnalysisAI

Uncontrolled resource consumption in the jahlives openssl_encrypt PHP library (versions before 1.4.9) allows local attackers with write access to identity stores to crash the host by supplying an excessively large memory_cost parameter in a crafted identity file. The flaw manifests during Argon2 key derivation when the library unlocks identities prior to authentication, triggering an out-of-memory condition on the host. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires write access to the local identity store directory or files used by the openssl_encrypt library - this is the specific, concrete prerequisite stated in the CVE description. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment Real-world risk is moderate and constrained by the local attack vector. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario A local attacker with write access to the identity store directory places a crafted identity file containing an extreme memory_cost value (for example, several terabytes) in the Argon2 configuration block. When a legitimate user or service attempts to unlock identities, the library reads the malicious file and passes the unchecked memory_cost to Argon2 key derivation, causing the host to exhaust available RAM and crash before authentication completes. …
Remediation Upgrade the jahlives openssl_encrypt library to version 1.4.9 or later, as documented in the vendor's security advisory at https://github.com/jahlives/openssl_encrypt/security/advisories/GHSA-783h-8q2f-f762. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
