Attacker needs no privileges to craft the restore file; victim must actively invoke --restore (UI:R); all impacts remain within the victim's own user context (S:U).

DescriptionCVE.org

hashcat fails to restrict command-line options when parsing restore files, allowing attackers to inject output-redirecting options like --outfile and --potfile-path. Attackers can craft restore files with malicious options to append attacker-controlled content to arbitrary files, enabling code execution when targeting shell startup files.

AnalysisAI

Option injection in hashcat's restore file parser (all versions through 7.1.2) allows an attacker who delivers a crafted restore file to append attacker-controlled content to arbitrary files on the victim's system. When a user runs 'hashcat --restore' against the malicious file, output-redirecting options such as --outfile and --potfile-path are accepted from the restore file without restriction, enabling writes to shell startup scripts and subsequent code execution at the victim's privilege level. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation The victim must run 'hashcat --restore' (or the legacy one-step equivalent) against a restore file that has been crafted or modified by an attacker prior to the session resumption. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment CVSS 4.0 scores this at 8.5 with a local attack vector (AV:L), low complexity (AC:L), no privilege requirement on the attacker's part (PR:N), and passive user interaction (UI:P), reflecting that exploitation is contingent on the victim actively running hashcat against a tampered restore file. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Build hashcat from commit fcae69f2438ff8eae0dc8e206b78067a1e465ed4 or a later tagged release once published at https://github.com/hashcat/hashcat, as the upstream fix is available per vendor (patch reference confirmed). … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
