DescriptionCVE.org

hashcat master branch builds after v7.1.2 contain a heap buffer overflow vulnerability in the KeePass AESKDF/KDBX v4 module (module 34301) that allows attackers to corrupt adjacent heap memory by supplying an oversized ninth hash field token. The module accepts up to 600 hex characters for the ninth token field but decodes it into a fixed 256-byte buffer with no length check, allowing a maximal input to write up to 44 bytes past the buffer boundary into adjacent esalt fields and heap chunk metadata, potentially enabling heap corruption or memory access violations.

AnalysisAI

Heap buffer overflow in hashcat's KeePass AESKDF/KDBX v4 cracking module (module_34301.c) exposes master branch builds after v7.1.2 to heap memory corruption when a privileged operator processes a crafted hash file containing an oversized ninth token field. The parser accepted up to 600 hex characters for a field decoded into a fixed 256-byte buffer with no length check, enabling up to 44 bytes of out-of-bounds writes into adjacent esalt fields and heap chunk metadata. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires all of the following conditions simultaneously: local system access, high-privilege execution context (PR:H per CVSS 4.0 - the operator must have sufficient rights to run hashcat), and active user interaction (UI:A - a privileged user must explicitly invoke hashcat with the crafted input). … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 4.0 score of 5.2 with vector AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:H/UI:A accurately reflects a tightly constrained exploitability profile. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation The upstream fix is confirmed in commit 6f374c4ff7d5dc951530fbbbcf6b45e3c169b100 (https://github.com/hashcat/hashcat/commit/6f374c4ff7d5dc951530fbbbcf6b45e3c169b100), merged via PR #4755 (https://github.com/hashcat/hashcat/pull/4755). … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
