DescriptionCVE.org

In Splunk Enterprise versions below 10.4.2, 10.2.6, 10.0.9, and 9.4.14, a user who does not hold the "admin" or "power" Splunk roles could submit a crafted knowledge bundle delta to delete arbitrary files accessible to Splunk Enterprise on a cluster manager. This could affect system integrity and disrupt service. The vulnerability is possible because knowledge bundle delta processing does not restrict removal paths to the staging directory and the endpoint does not enforce the expected authorization boundary. For more information see Knowledge bundle replication overview (https://help.splunk.com/en/splunk-enterprise/administer/distributed-search/10.4/knowledge-bundle-replication/knowledge-bundle-replication-overview) in the Splunk documentation.

AnalysisAI

Arbitrary file deletion on Splunk cluster managers is possible for any authenticated, low-privileged user - no admin or power role required - by submitting a crafted knowledge bundle delta containing path traversal sequences. Affected versions span four active release branches: 9.4.x before 9.4.14, 10.0.x before 10.0.9, 10.2.x before 10.2.6, and 10.4.x before 10.4.2. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation The attacker must possess a valid Splunk Enterprise account; however, the 'admin' and 'power' roles are explicitly NOT required - any lower-privileged role (e.g., user, read-only) is sufficient. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The NVD CVSS 3.1 score of 5.4 (Medium) with vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:L accurately reflects the attack surface: network-reachable, low complexity, requiring only a standard Splunk account. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An attacker with any valid Splunk Enterprise account - such as a read-only analyst account or a service account with minimal permissions - constructs a knowledge bundle delta payload containing path traversal sequences (e.g., '../../') in the file removal list. They submit this delta to the cluster manager's bundle replication endpoint over the network without needing admin or power role privileges. …
Remediation The primary remediation is to upgrade Splunk Enterprise to a fixed release: version 9.4.14, 10.0.9, 10.2.6, or 10.4.2 depending on the deployed branch, as detailed in the Splunk advisory at https://advisory.splunk.com/advisories/SVD-2026-0801. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
