DescriptionCVE.org

A flaw was found in the Submariner operator. The Submariner Custom Resource (CR), used for configuring network connectivity, stores the IPsec pre-shared key (PSK) in an unencrypted format. This key, which is critical for securing communication between Kubernetes clusters, can be accessed by unauthorized parties. Such access enables an attacker to passively decrypt network traffic flowing between any two clusters in the mesh, resulting in sensitive information disclosure.

AnalysisAI

Cleartext storage of the IPsec pre-shared key (PSK) in the Submariner Custom Resource exposes the cryptographic secret used to secure all inter-cluster communication in Red Hat Advanced Cluster Management for Kubernetes 2 deployments. Any principal with low-privilege read access to the Submariner CR object within the Kubernetes cluster can retrieve the PSK and use it to passively decrypt IPsec-encrypted traffic flowing between every cluster in the connected mesh - not just the cluster where access was obtained (CVSS scope change S:C). …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires two conditions to be simultaneously met: first, the attacker must hold a Kubernetes identity (user, service account, or compromised pod) with at minimum read (GET) permission on the Submariner Custom Resource in the namespace where it is deployed - this is a low-privilege requirement (CVSS PR:L), not unauthenticated access. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The NVD CVSS 6.5 with vector AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:N/A:N accurately characterizes the threat model. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An attacker who has compromised a low-privilege service account - for example, via a vulnerable application pod with cluster-reader or developer RBAC bindings - issues a kubectl get submariner -o yaml command or equivalent API call to retrieve the Submariner CR. The cleartext PSK is visible in the resource output. …
Remediation No specific patched version number is identified in the available data - the Red Hat advisory at https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-66781 and Bugzilla issue https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2507526 should be consulted directly for the current patch status and target fix version. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
