| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires an authenticated filebrowser session (CVSS PR:L confirmed); unauthenticated access is not possible. The bypass is only meaningful when the target user's account has Perm.Download explicitly set to false - users who have Perm.Download=true (the default for most deployments) are unaffected because no permission boundary is circumvented. Scope and path authorization are NOT bypassed; the attacker can only request checksums for files they are otherwise permitted to see within their configured scope. The attacker must know or guess the file path, as directory listing permissions (Perm.Create, etc.) are separate and not affected. What limits exploitation: the attacker receives only a hash, never the file bytes, so extraction of non-guessable high-entropy content (e.g., random cryptographic keys) is not feasible via this oracle alone. |
| Impact | The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:L/VI:N/VA:N) scores 5.3 and accurately characterizes the risk: network-reachable, low complexity, but gated behind authenticated access (PR:L), with only partial confidentiality exposure (VC:L - hashes, not plaintext). No EPSS data was provided in the intelligence input, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified numerically; this should be noted as a gap. The vulnerability is not listed in CISA KEV, and no public exploit or POC code is identified at time of analysis. The real-world impact depends heavily on what files are within the authenticated user's scope: for high-entropy files (encrypted archives, binary blobs), the hash oracle yields little actionable information; for low-entropy files (config snippets, known templates, predictable credential files), offline dictionary attacks against the digest become feasible. This is a medium-priority finding for organizations using filebrowser with fine-grained permission models - particularly those who explicitly restrict Perm.Download for specific users under the assumption that those users cannot infer file contents. Organizations using filebrowser in a trust-everyone deployment model (all authenticated users have full permissions) are unaffected in practice. The incomplete-fix lineage (CVE-2026-35606) suggests the codebase has a history of authorization gaps in this handler, which warrants a broader audit of all resourceGetHandler branches. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An authenticated filebrowser user whose account has Perm.Download explicitly set to false (e.g., a read-audit account or a restricted contractor) sends a GET request to /api/resources/path/to/sensitive.conf?checksum=sha256 - the server reads the full file, computes the SHA256 digest, and returns it in the response without triggering the download permission check. The attacker then compares the returned hash against a precomputed dictionary of candidate configuration values (e.g., known API key formats, default passwords) to confirm or deny the file's exact content, or polls the endpoint periodically to detect when the file changes. No public exploit code is known at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Aug 14, 2026
Authenticated users with Perm.Download=false can extract cryptographic content hashes (MD5, SHA1, SHA256, SHA512) for any file within their scope via filebrowser's /api/resources?checksum= endpoint, bypassing the intended download permission gate. The resourceGetHandler's checksum branch reads entire file content to compute digests but omits the Perm.Download check enforced by all sibling handler paths (raw, preview, subtitle). This is an incomplete remediation of CVE-2026-35606; no public exploit is identified at time of analysis, and the CVSS 4.0 vector (PR:L, VC:L) confirms exploitation requires an authenticated session. The hash oracle enables content confirmation, change detection, and offline brute-force of low-entropy files without ever receiving the file bytes directly.
RemediationAI
Upgrade filebrowser to version 2.63.19 or later, which adds the missing Perm.Download check to the checksum branch of resourceGetHandler; the upstream patch is at https://github.com/filebrowser/filebrowser/commit/b7dc392838f11d188f0bc0f2a1a99fad3f7dca03 and the security advisory is at https://github.com/filebrowser/filebrowser/security/advisories/GHSA-7whw-q6gh-xr59. If immediate upgrade is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to remove Perm.Download=false restrictions from affected users and instead enforce access boundaries at the scope/path level (which is not bypassed by this vulnerability), accepting that those users can download files directly - this eliminates the asymmetry the attacker exploits. Alternatively, deploy a reverse proxy or WAF rule that strips or blocks requests containing the ?checksum= query parameter on /api/resources; note this will break legitimate checksum UI functionality for all users. Network-layer controls (VPN, IP allowlisting for the filebrowser port) reduce exposure but do not eliminate it for users who already have authenticated access.

Technical ContextAI · show details
filebrowser (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:filebrowser:filebrowser:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) is a self-hosted web-based file manager exposing a REST API at /api/resources. The resourceGetHandler dispatches on query parameters: raw, preview, subtitle, and checksum branches each serve distinct file-serving functions. CVE-2026-35606 previously identified a download-permission bypass, and a partial fix introduced Perm.Download checks into most handler branches. The checksum branch - which invokes full file I/O to compute a digest - was overlooked during that fix, leaving it governed only by scope/path authorization but not by the Perm.Download flag. CWE-200 (Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor) applies: the system correctly limits file delivery but inadvertently exposes a side-channel (the hash) that leaks information about file contents. The hash oracle is particularly dangerous for low-entropy content (e.g., short configuration values, predictable templates) where SHA256 output can be matched against a precomputed rainbow table or dictionary.

DescriptionCVE.org
filebrowser before 2.63.19 contains a permission bypass in the /api/resources endpoint. The checksum (?checksum=) branch of resourceGetHandler reads the entire file to compute a digest and returns it without performing a Perm.Download check (unlike the sibling raw, preview, and subtitle paths). As a result, an authenticated user provisioned with Perm.Download=false can obtain a content-hash oracle for any same-scope file (md5/sha1/sha256/sha512), enabling confirmation of known/guessed content, change detection, and offline brute-force of low-entropy files. This is an incomplete fix of CVE-2026-35606; it bypasses only the Download permission and does not defeat scope/path authorization.
