MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Discovery, Collection The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | A symlink that resolves to a target outside the user's source root/scope must already exist and be reachable inside the served directory - and, for the unauthenticated vector, inside a directory that has been published as a public share. This condition commonly arises when host directories are bind-mounted into the container (the typical Docker deployment) or when user scopes overlap shared storage, so such symlinks appear without the attacker creating them. The affected read flows (download, preview, media/subtitle, OnlyOffice, and public-share download) must have FollowSymlinks enabled, which the vulnerable versions do by default on these paths. Limiting factors that reduce realistic risk: the authenticated vector still requires an account with download access; the unauthenticated vector additionally requires that an owner has created a public share covering a directory containing the qualifying symlink; the attacker cannot read a target for which no reachable in-scope symlink exists. Affected versions: filebrowser < 1.5.2-stable, and 2.0.0-beta through < 2.0.1-beta; the only complete fix per the vendor is upgrading to 1.5.2-stable or 2.0.1-beta, which add a containment check verifying the resolved path stays within the user's scope. |
| Impact | Signals are mostly aligned toward a genuine, time-bounded priority rather than an inflated high-CVSS artifact. The CVSS 3.1 base score of 8.6 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:N/A:N) reflects a network-reachable, unauthenticated information-disclosure flaw whose scope-change (S:C) is justified because a reachable symlink lets the app serve files belonging to the host OS or other tenants, outside its authorization boundary. The PR:N is specifically driven by the public-share vector, where only a share hash - no account - authorizes the read; the authenticated download vector works for any scoped user with download access. A full, step-by-step proof-of-concept is published inside the vendor's own GHSA advisory and was confirmed live against gtstef/filebrowser:1.3.3-stable (observed output includes /etc/passwd and a secret file), so exploitation is low-effort for anyone who can reach a qualifying deployment. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_week' (not act_now/emergency), consistent with a serious but not mass-exploited issue. Tempering the raw score: exploitation is NOT universal because it REQUIRES a pre-existing symlink that points outside scope to already be reachable in the served (or publicly shared) directory - a precondition that is common in bind-mounted Docker setups and overlapping shared storage but is not guaranteed in every install. Missing/conflicting data to note explicitly: no EPSS score was provided, so statistical exploitation probability cannot be stated; the CVE is NOT listed in CISA KEV, so there is no confirmed active exploitation despite a working PoC - do not conflate the two. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | In a typical Docker deployment where a host directory is bind-mounted into FileBrowser, a symlink inside the served tree points at an out-of-scope target (e.g. /etc/passwd, another tenant's files, or container secrets). An authenticated user with download access - or, if the directory is exposed via a public share, anyone holding only the share link with no account - requests that symlink through the download, preview, media, OnlyOffice, or public-share read endpoint and receives the out-of-scope file's contents. A working proof-of-concept demonstrating both the authenticated and unauthenticated-share vectors is published in the vendor GHSA advisory and was confirmed live. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026
Symlink-following read paths in FileBrowser Quantum serve files from outside a user's assigned scope: download, preview, media/subtitle, OnlyOffice and public-share handlers resolve links with filepath.EvalSymlinks and then open the resolved target without checking that it is still inside the source root. The unauthenticated worst case, reflected in the CVSS vector (PR:N, S:C, C:H), is a holder of a public share link reading any file the server process can reach through a symlink reachable in the shared directory; an authenticated user with download access achieves the same, including cross-tenant reads where scopes overlap. Exposure requires that a qualifying symlink already exists in the served tree - common with bind-mounted host directories in Docker deployments - and affects filebrowser versions before 1.5.2-stable and 2.0.0-beta through 2.0.1-beta, which are fixed by 1.5.2-stable and 2.0.1-beta. A public proof-of-concept walkthrough accompanies the GHSA advisory and was demonstrated live against 1.3.3-stable; there is no CISA KEV entry, so active exploitation is not confirmed.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to 1.5.2-stable or 2.0.1-beta, which add the scope containment check on symlink-resolving read paths (vendor-released patch: 1.5.2-stable and 2.0.1-beta; the Go module fix lands at 0.0.0-20260814233832-4126edeb07a0). The change is delivered through https://github.com/gtsteffaniak/filebrowser/pull/2795 and https://github.com/gtsteffaniak/filebrowser/pull/2800, with commits 4126edeb07a015c3809a89249b283e07a4e50c38 and 3c8c02414eefd3351ffe437fa39ff6eb150ffa67, and the advisory at https://github.com/gtsteffaniak/filebrowser/security/advisories/GHSA-mgqf-5mf5-prfj lists the same releases; per the vendor, updating is the only complete fix, and the advisory's suggested back-port is to compare the resolved path with the source root via filepath.Rel and reject '..' escapes on every handler that sets FollowSymlinks. Until the upgrade is deployed, the actionable reduction is to remove or repoint symlinks that resolve outside their source root from directories served by FileBrowser, including bind-mounted host paths (side effect: legitimate symlink workflows inside the served tree stop working), and to avoid creating or keeping public shares over directories that contain such symlinks, since the public share endpoint is authorized by the hash alone and would otherwise allow unauthenticated reads through them; neither measure protects against a symlink that an operator misses.

Technical ContextAI · show details
FileBrowser Quantum is a self-hosted Go file manager that indexes one or more "sources" and restricts each user to a subdirectory (scope) within a source. The flaw is a classic CWE-22 path traversal realized through symbolic links (CWE-59): iteminfo.ResolveSymlinks calls filepath.EvalSymlinks on the joined path and returns the fully resolved target, and indexing.GetRealPath then hands that resolved path to file handlers with no filepath.Rel containment check against the index or user-scope root. The codebase already contains a containment helper (symlinkTargetStaysUnderDest) but it is applied only to archive extraction, not to the general read path. Read handlers in http/resource.go, http/media.go, http/onlyOffice.go and http/public.go all set FollowSymlinks: true, so the resolved out-of-scope target is streamed through normal download, preview, subtitle, OnlyOffice and public-share endpoints; the public route (GET /resources/download via withHashFile) is authorized by the share hash alone, which is why the assessed vector is PR:N. The upstream fix threads the user's scope (userScope/BoundIndexPath) into the indexing layer, adds GetRealPathScoped and a new ErrPathEscapesScope error, and rejects any resolved path that escapes the scope on every FollowSymlinks read path. Trigger mechanics beyond this resolution gap are not described in the available sources.

2DescriptionCVE.org
FileBrowser Quantum is a free, self-hosted, web-based file manager. Prior to 1.5.2-stable and 2.0.1-beta, file read handling in backend/pkg/indexing/indexingFiles.go resolves symbolic links through GetRealPath without confirming that the resolved target remains inside the source root and the user's authorized scope. Download, preview, media, OnlyOffice, and public-share read flows that enable FollowSymlinks can therefore serve an out-of-scope target through a reachable in-scope symlink. An authenticated user with download access can read server-accessible files outside the assigned scope, and a holder of a public share link can do the same without an account when the shared directory exposes such a symlink. This issue is fixed in 1.5.2-stable and 2.0.1-beta.
