DescriptionCVE.org

calibre is an e-book manager. Prior to 9.12.0, calibre processes attacker-controlled composite_template metadata from a malicious EPUB, OPF, PDF, or similar file through program: and a nested template() call whose formatter does not inherit allow_python_templates=False, allowing a nested python: template to reach compile_python_template and execute arbitrary Python code when the file is opened or imported. This issue is fixed in version 9.12.0.

AnalysisAI

Arbitrary Python code execution in calibre's template engine affects all versions prior to 9.12.0, triggered when a user opens or imports a crafted EPUB, OPF, PDF, or OPF file containing malicious composite_template metadata. The root cause is a sandbox policy inheritance failure: nested formatter invocations via template(), eval(), re_group(), and list_re_group() instantiated fresh formatter objects without propagating allow_python_templates=False from the parent, allowing an embedded python: sub-template to bypass the restriction and reach compile_python_template. …

Attack ChainAIDerived

Hypothetical attack flow derived from CVE metadata

Access
Craft malicious EPUB with python: payload in composite_template metadata
Delivery
Deliver file to victim via download, email, or sharing
Exploit
Victim opens or imports file in calibre < 9.12.0
Execution
Outer program: formatter spawns child formatter without allow_python_templates=False
Persist
Child formatter reaches compile_python_template
Impact
Arbitrary Python executes as calibre process user

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires that the victim open or import a file in calibre containing attacker-controlled composite_template metadata using a program: prefix with a nested template(), eval(), re_group(), or list_re_group() call embedding a python: sub-template. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 4.0 score of 8.5 (AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H) is well-calibrated: the local attack vector correctly reflects that the malicious file must reach the victim's filesystem, and passive user interaction (opening or importing a file) is required. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An attacker distributes a crafted EPUB file - for example, via a torrent site, phishing email, or compromised e-book repository - with composite_template metadata set to program: template('python:\ndef evaluate(book, ctx): import subprocess; subprocess.run([...])'). When the victim opens or imports this file in calibre prior to 9.12.0, the metadata formatter spawns a child formatter without the allow_python_templates=False restriction, executing the embedded Python payload with the full privileges of the calibre process and the user running it. …
Remediation Upgrade calibre to version 9.12.0 or later, the vendor-confirmed fix release available at https://github.com/kovidgoyal/calibre/releases/tag/v9.12.0. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, inventory calibre deployments across your organization and document which users import external or untrusted documents; if significant external import usage is confirmed, restrict calibre access to pre-approved trusted content sources only pending full mitigation implementation. …
