| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires all of the following: (1) the target system runs FreeCAD prior to version 1.1.2; (2) the victim opens a crafted .FCStd document file - delivery depends on social engineering, phishing, or a compromised shared file location; (3) the victim navigates to a FEM ConstraintDisplacement object within the document and opens its task dialog; (4) the victim clicks Accept (OK/Apply) in the dialog, which triggers TaskDlgFemConstraintDisplacement::accept() and the vulnerable doCommand() call. Documents that contain no FEM Displacement Constraint objects are not exploitable. The FEM workbench must be active and the specific constraint object must be present and opened. Exploitation is not automatable - it cannot be triggered remotely without the victim actively interacting with the dialog, ruling out network-scanning or scripted mass-exploitation. The attack is platform-agnostic across all FreeCAD-supported operating systems. No authentication to any remote system is required, but victim interaction is the binding prerequisite that limits opportunistic exploitation. |
| Impact | The CVSS 4.0 base score of 8.5 with AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P reflects the realistic attack model: the attacker needs no system privileges and faces no technical complexity barrier, but the attack is local in vector (requires the victim to open a crafted file) and requires passive user interaction (the victim must accept the dialog). SSVC corroborates this picture - Automatable: no rules out mass-scanning campaigns, while Technical Impact: total confirms that successful exploitation yields full process-level control. The combination of a confirmed POC, low attack complexity, and total technical impact makes this a high-priority patch target for engineering teams that use FreeCAD's FEM workbench. Absence from CISA KEV suggests no confirmed active exploitation campaigns, but the low remediation friction (a single upgrade to 1.1.2) means the risk-benefit calculation strongly favors patching. EPSS probabilistic data was not provided in the available intelligence and cannot be cited. The local attack vector does not imply low risk: document-format weaponization is a well-established delivery mechanism requiring only social engineering or a shared network drive. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker crafts a FreeCAD project file (.FCStd archive) containing a FEM ConstraintDisplacement object whose xDisplacementFormula property is set to a value such as '\'; import os; os.system("malicious_command"); x = "' - a backslash sequence that escapes the Python string generated by doCommand() and appends arbitrary Python statements. The file is delivered to an engineer via email attachment, Slack share, or a poisoned shared network drive. When the victim opens the file in unpatched FreeCAD, navigates to the FEM Displacement Constraint in the model tree, and clicks Accept in the task dialog, the injected Python executes immediately within the FreeCAD process's privilege context. A proof-of-concept is confirmed available per SSVC data, lowering the barrier to exploitation. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Aug 11, 2026
Python code injection in FreeCAD's FEM Displacement Constraint dialog (all versions prior to 1.1.2) enables arbitrary code execution at the FreeCAD process's privilege level when a victim opens and accepts a weaponized project file. The root cause is an incomplete sanitization routine in TaskFemConstraintDisplacement.cpp that strips double-quotes from user-supplied formula fields but leaves backslash characters unhandled, allowing crafted input to escape the Python string boundary constructed by Gui::Command::doCommand(). SSVC rates technical impact as total and confirms a proof-of-concept exists; no CISA KEV listing is present, indicating no confirmed active exploitation campaigns at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to FreeCAD 1.1.2 or later, which is the vendor-confirmed patched release; the fix is implemented in commits 0a208ac11cfe7b61c424ee4bb79117138ec50ac2 and 3f60d202a8246958232e2fbc74ba38a83483b74e, merged via pull requests #31267 and #31312, available at https://github.com/FreeCAD/FreeCAD/releases/tag/1.1.2. For environments that cannot immediately upgrade, the primary compensating control is to restrict the source of opened FreeCAD documents to internally-generated or digitally verified files only - this directly blocks the social-engineering delivery vector without disabling any FreeCAD capability. If an organization must open external FreeCAD files, sandboxing the FreeCAD process (e.g., via a containerized or virtualized environment with restricted network and filesystem access) limits the blast radius of successful exploitation, though this introduces operational overhead. Disabling the FEM workbench entirely prevents the vulnerable dialog from being reached but eliminates all FEM analysis functionality - an acceptable trade-off only for users who do not use FEM features. No configuration option exists to selectively disable Displacement Constraint processing while retaining other FEM functionality. The vendor advisory is at https://github.com/FreeCAD/FreeCAD/security/advisories/GHSA-2rq3-gx3h-489q.

Technical ContextAI · show details
FreeCAD's GUI layer uses a Python command-dispatch mechanism - Gui::Command::doCommand() - to apply values from task dialogs to the live document model. In the FEM (Finite Element Method) workbench, the Displacement Constraint task dialog (src/Mod/Fem/Gui/TaskFemConstraintDisplacement.cpp) constructs Python assignment commands as C-style format strings, embedding the user-supplied xDisplacementFormula, yDisplacementFormula, and zDisplacementFormula values directly into the command text. The pre-fix code performed only quote-escaping (replacing " with \"), leaving backslash characters as valid Python escape sequences that can terminate the string literal and append arbitrary Python statements. CWE-94 (Improper Control of Generation of Code) precisely describes this class: user-controlled data flows into a code generation path without full neutralization, causing it to be interpreted as executable code rather than as a string value. The fix, applied in commits 0a208ac and 3f60d20, eliminates the injection surface entirely by bypassing doCommand() and setting properties directly via constraint->xDisplacementFormula.setValue(), treating the formula as opaque data rather than constructing a Python command string from it.

Lifecycle Timeline
2DescriptionCVE.org
FreeCAD is a free and open-source multiplatform 3D parametric modeler. Prior to 1.1.2, the FEM Displacement Constraint task dialog in src/Mod/Fem/Gui/TaskFemConstraintDisplacement.cpp passes the xDisplacementFormula, yDisplacementFormula, and zDisplacementFormula fields of a Fem::ConstraintDisplacement object through TaskDlgFemConstraintDisplacement::accept() into Gui::Command::doCommand. The escaping helper neutralizes quotation marks but not backslashes, allowing crafted formula text to terminate the generated Python string and execute arbitrary Python code with the FreeCAD process's privileges when a victim accepts the dialog. This issue is fixed in version 1.1.2.

Executive ViewAI
FreeCAD versions before 1.1.2 enable arbitrary code execution when engineers and designers open malicious project files, with no vendor patch currently available. This exposes design teams and intellectual property to compromise through insider threats or supply chain attacks targeting project files. Immediate operational containment is required pending patch availability.
Restrict FreeCAD project file access to internal, trusted sources only; implement network segmentation isolating FreeCAD workstations from critical systems; disable or monitor dynamic code execution features within FreeCAD where possible; provide security awareness training to engineering teams on risks of opening untrusted project files; monitor FreeCAD process behavior for anomalous Python module imports or system calls.
