| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the FreeRDP client (version <= 3.28.0) to be configured to tunnel its RDP connection through an HTTP proxy - this proxy-tunneling mode is the specific code path (http_proxy_connect) that writes the unfiltered value into the CONNECT request line and Host header. It also requires the client to connect to, or be redirected to, an attacker-controlled or compromised RDP server that can send a crafted redirection PDU with CRLF/control characters in the TargetNetAddress field. Limiting factors: without HTTP proxy tunneling the injection sink is never reached; the attacker must control the RDP server side of the session; and the victim must initiate/accept the RDP connection or redirection, so this is a client-side, server-to-client attack rather than exploitation of an exposed listening service. |
| Impact | The vendor's CVSS 4.0 base score of 9.3 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H) is high, but the real-world risk is more nuanced than that score implies. Exploitation is not a generic remote-unauthenticated attack against an exposed service: it requires the victim FreeRDP client to (a) be configured to tunnel through an HTTP proxy - a non-default deployment choice - and (b) connect to or be redirected to an attacker-controlled or compromised RDP server. The vector's UI:N and AT:N therefore understate the practical preconditions, since a user action to initiate the RDP session and a specific proxy configuration are both needed; this is worth verifying against the vendor advisory. The declared VC:H/VI:H/VA:H impact also appears optimistic for what is fundamentally a header/request-injection primitive against the proxy channel - the concrete, well-supported impact is integrity of the proxy request (request smuggling, tunnel redirection, header forgery) rather than guaranteed full confidentiality/availability loss on the endpoint. There is no EPSS score, no KEV listing, and no public PoC provided, so this reads as a genuine but conditional client-side issue best prioritized for environments that proxy RDP, rather than an internet-wide mass-exploitation threat. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker operating or having compromised an RDP server waits for (or lures, via a malicious .rdp file or a redirect from a benign-looking server) a FreeRDP client that tunnels through a corporate HTTP proxy. The server returns a redirection PDU whose TargetNetAddress contains CRLF sequences followed by attacker-chosen HTTP headers or a smuggled request; when the client builds its proxy CONNECT, those bytes are emitted verbatim, letting the attacker forge the Host/headers or smuggle a second request through the proxy. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, so this scenario is based on the described injection primitive rather than a released PoC. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Aug 01, 2026
HTTP request/header injection in FreeRDP through 3.28.0 allows a malicious or compromised RDP server to inject arbitrary data into a client's outbound HTTP proxy CONNECT request. The server-controlled RDP redirection TargetNetAddress field is copied into the client ServerHostname and written unfiltered into the proxy CONNECT request line and Host header, so a crafted redirection PDU carrying CRLF and control characters can forge headers or smuggle additional requests. Reported by VulnCheck; a vendor patch exists in FreeRDP 3.29.0. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and no CISA KEV listing.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: FreeRDP 3.29.0 - upgrade all FreeRDP clients and any downstream products that bundle FreeRDP to 3.29.0 or later, which adds validation/filtering of the redirection target before it reaches http_proxy_connect(); see the advisory at https://github.com/FreeRDP/FreeRDP/security/advisories/GHSA-mwwh-mhp9-q7vm and the fix commit https://github.com/FreeRDP/FreeRDP/commit/f3b4347105114fe7453828736bea069999af319f. Where immediate patching is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to disable HTTP proxy tunneling for RDP connections (the injection sink only triggers on the proxy CONNECT path), accepting the trade-off that clients behind a mandatory forward proxy may lose RDP connectivity. Additionally, restrict clients to connecting only to trusted, known RDP servers and disable or distrust server-initiated redirection where the client supports it, since the malicious value arrives via the redirection PDU; the trade-off is reduced compatibility with legitimate load-balanced/redirecting RDP farms. Network-side, an HTTP proxy that strictly rejects CONNECT request lines and Host headers containing control characters can blunt smuggling attempts as defense-in-depth.

Technical ContextAI · show details
FreeRDP is the dominant open-source implementation of Microsoft's Remote Desktop Protocol, embedded in clients such as xfreerdp and Remmina and in numerous commercial and embedded products (CPE cpe:2.3:a:freerdp:freerdp). The flaw is a classic CWE-113 (Improper Neutralization of CRLF Sequences in HTTP Headers / HTTP response/request splitting). RDP supports server-initiated redirection, in which a server returns a redirection PDU telling the client to reconnect to another target (TargetNetAddress). FreeRDP copies that attacker-controlled string into ServerHostname and, when the client is configured to tunnel RDP through an HTTP proxy, passes it directly into http_proxy_connect() where it becomes the host in the CONNECT request line and the Host header - with no validation that it excludes CR, LF, or other control characters. Because CONNECT requests are line-oriented HTTP, embedded CRLF lets the server terminate the request line early and append arbitrary headers or a second smuggled request.

DescriptionCVE.org
FreeRDP before 3.29.0 (affected versions <= 3.28.0) does not validate CRLF and control characters in the server-controlled RDP redirection TargetNetAddress field. This value is copied into the client's ServerHostname and, when the client connects through an HTTP proxy, is written directly into the proxy CONNECT request line and Host header by http_proxy_connect() without filtering. A malicious or compromised RDP server can send a crafted redirection PDU containing embedded control characters to inject arbitrary headers/requests into the HTTP proxy CONNECT request.
Executive ViewAI
FreeRDP versions through 3.28.0 contain a critical HTTP header injection vulnerability that allows a malicious RDP server to inject arbitrary requests and forge HTTP proxy headers when clients attempt outbound connections. Organizations relying on FreeRDP for remote access are at risk of session hijacking, credential theft, and lateral movement if connected to a compromised server.
