MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Execution, Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires ALL four of the following non-default conditions to be simultaneously true: (1) Unbound is configured with the 'respip' or 'rpz' module; (2) a module capable of attaching subqueries is also active - specifically dns64, subnetcache, or respip CNAME redirection; (3) at least one 'access-control-view' directive is configured, which causes view name assignment to queries; and (4) the server is under sufficient query pressure that the jostle eviction mechanism activates and begins dropping slow queries. None of these conditions are present in a default Unbound installation. Exploitation is further limited by memory allocator behavior and heap layout at time of the free - the vendor explicitly states crash likelihood is low. No authentication is required from the attacker's perspective (DNS queries are unauthenticated), but the server-side configuration gates are the primary limiting factor for real-world exposure. |
| Impact | Real-world risk is meaningfully lower than the CVSS 5.9 score might imply in isolation. The AC:H vector metric correctly reflects that exploitation requires a highly specific and rare configuration intersection: respip/rpz modules active, a subquery-attaching module (dns64, subnetcache, or respip CNAME redirection) enabled, an access-control-view configured, and the server operating under sufficient query pressure to trigger jostle eviction. All four conditions must coincide. The vendor itself characterizes crash likelihood as low, contingent on memory allocator behavior and layout - introducing additional uncertainty that CVSS does not capture. No EPSS data was provided, and with no POC and no KEV listing, the exploitation probability signal is effectively neutral. SSVC assessment: exploitation status is 'none'; technical impact is partial (DoS only, no C/I impact); not trivially automatable due to load dependency. This is a real but operationally low-urgency issue for most deployments - highest priority for organizations running dns64 or RPZ with access-control-views on high-traffic resolvers. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker sends a sustained flood of DNS queries to a targeted Unbound resolver configured with RPZ/respip, dns64, and access-control-view, driving it into jostle-eviction mode under load. A subquery in flight holds a shallow pointer to a view name string whose parent query is simultaneously evicted and freed; the subquery's subsequent access to that freed memory region causes heap corruption. Depending on memory layout and allocator behavior, the resolver may crash (DoS) or silently continue with corrupted state - the vendor indicates a crash is the more likely of these outcomes. |

Memory corruption via use-after-free in NLnet Labs Unbound 1.25.0-1.25.1 can cause a DNS resolver crash under specific, non-default configurations when the server is under load. The flaw originates from a regression introduced in a fix enabling 'respip' and 'dns64' module interoperability: subqueries receive a shallow copy of the active view name, and if the parent query is evicted (jostled) before the subquery completes, the dangling reference causes memory corruption. No public exploit code exists and no confirmed active exploitation (CISA KEV) has been identified; the vendor explicitly describes crash likelihood as low due to dependence on memory layout and allocator behavior.
RemediationAI
Consult the NLnet Labs vendor advisory at https://www.nlnetlabs.nl/downloads/unbound/CVE-2026-52863.txt for the exact patched release version; no patched version number was present in the available intelligence data, so upgrading to the latest stable release beyond 1.25.1 is the recommended primary action. If an immediate upgrade is not feasible, the vendor advisory outlines that the vulnerability requires concurrent presence of respip/rpz, a subquery-capable module, and access-control-view - disabling any one of these three configuration elements eliminates the vulnerable code path. Specifically, removing the dns64 module configuration or eliminating access-control-view directives from the Unbound configuration are the least disruptive workarounds, though each removes intended resolver functionality. Reducing query load via rate-limiting (e.g., ratelimit: and ratelimit-slabs: directives) may reduce the probability of jostle eviction, but does not eliminate the vulnerability. Running Unbound with ASAN or valgrind in staging can help detect the condition before production deployment.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Unbound is a validating, recursive DNS resolver maintained by NLnet Labs, widely deployed in ISPs and enterprise DNS infrastructure. The vulnerability (CWE-416: Use After Free) arises in the inter-module communication layer between 'respip'/'rpz' policy modules and modules that attach subqueries (dns64, respip CNAME redirection, subnetcache). When Unbound is under query load and jostle logic activates to drop slow queries, a parent query holding the authoritative reference to a view name string (selected via 'access-control-view') may be freed while a subquery holds a shallow pointer to that same string. The subsequent access to the freed memory region constitutes a classic use-after-free. CPE string cpe:2.3:a:nlnet_labs:unbound:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covers the affected range; precise affected versions are 1.25.0 and 1.25.1. Debug builds with memory sanitizers (e.g., ASAN) will immediately terminate the process, preventing silent corruption but causing a crash.

In NLnet Labs Unbound 1.25.0 up to and including 1.25.1, a fix that makes the 'respip' and 'dns64' modules work together, creates a shallow copy of the view name in effect that could lead to memory corruption if the owner of the original view name is jostled out when Unbound is under pressure. Unbound needs to be configured with one of 'respip'/'rpz' modules, together with a module that can attach subqueries (respip CNAME redirection, dns64, subnetcache) and a configured 'access-control-view' while Unbound is under pressure so that joslte logic kicks in and starts dropping slow queries. The subquery is getting a shallow copy of the view name and if the super query which owns the view name is jostled out, memory corruption can occur. Likelihood of a crash is low, since it relies heavily on the underlying memory allocator and the memory layout. Debug memory builds (e.g., ASAN) that catch the free terminate the server.

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.
Use-after-free vulnerabilities occur when a program continues to access memory through a pointer after that memory has been deallocated.
Memory corruption occurs when a program writes data beyond the boundaries of allocated memory regions or accesses memory in unintended ways, violating the integrity of the process's address space.
