CRITICAL 9.3

DescriptionCVE.org

Home Assistant Core before 2026.6.0 contains a path traversal vulnerability in the backup-restore function that allows attackers to write files to arbitrary absolute filesystem paths by supplying a crafted tar archive with a SYMTYPE entry containing a benign member name paired with an absolute linkname pointing outside the extraction directory. Because the official Docker image runs the Home Assistant process as root and the subsequent regular-file entry is written through the unvalidated symlink, attackers can achieve remote code execution by overwriting auto-imported Python paths such as site-packages/sitecustomize.py or custom component directories.

AnalysisAI

Path-traversal to remote code execution in Home Assistant Core before 2026.6.0 lets an authenticated user who can supply a backup archive overwrite arbitrary files on the host. The backup-restore routine trusts a tar SYMTYPE (symlink) entry whose linkname is an absolute path outside the extraction directory, then writes a following regular-file entry through that unvalidated symlink; because the official Docker image runs the process as root, an attacker can drop code into auto-imported Python paths (e.g. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires an attacker-supplied backup tar archive to be processed by the Home Assistant Core backup-restore function - specifically a tar entry of type SYMTYPE (symlink) whose linkname is an absolute path outside the extraction directory, immediately followed by a regular-file entry that gets written through that symlink. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The vendor CVSS 4.0 score is 9.3 (Critical) with vector AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:H/UI:A, and the impact metrics are maximal (VC/VI/VA:H and subsequent-system SC/SI/SA:H reflecting root-level host compromise). … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An attacker with admin access to a Home Assistant instance (or who tricks an administrator into restoring a supplied backup) crafts a malicious backup tar containing an absolute-linkname symlink entry plus a follow-up file entry targeting site-packages/sitecustomize.py. When the backup is restored, the payload file is written through the symlink outside the extraction directory as root, and the attacker's Python code executes at the next interpreter startup, yielding full host code execution. …
Remediation Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Home Assistant Core 2026.6.0 or later, which corrects the backup-restore symlink handling (fix commit 1e457600f1093c15e1325742d03e2b76498c79c1, PR 172252). … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
