2DescriptionCVE.org
A stack-based buffer overflow was found in rpcbind's rpcinfo utility. When querying a remote rpcbind service with rpcinfo -l, address information returned by the server is copied into a fixed-size buffer without sufficient bounds checking. A malicious or compromised rpcbind server could use this flaw to crash the rpcinfo client, resulting in a denial of service. The highest threat from this vulnerability is to system availability.
AnalysisAI
Stack-based buffer overflow in the rpcinfo client utility (part of the rpcbind package) crashes the client process when querying a malicious or compromised rpcbind server using the -l flag. Address data returned by the server is copied into a fixed-size stack buffer without bounds validation (CWE-121), enabling a server-side attacker to trigger a denial of service against any administrator or script that runs rpcinfo -l against their controlled endpoint. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, and no CISA KEV listing; impact is confined to client-side availability with no confidentiality or integrity exposure.
Technical ContextAI
rpcbind is the ONC RPC portmapper daemon - a foundational service on Linux systems enabling RPC-based protocols such as NFS and NIS to register and discover services. The rpcinfo utility communicates with rpcbind services to enumerate registered RPC programs; the -l flag requests address-listing output. CWE-121 (Stack-based Buffer Overflow) identifies the root cause: server-supplied address strings are copied into a statically sized stack buffer in the rpcinfo client without first verifying the data length against the buffer capacity, allowing a malicious server response to overwrite adjacent stack memory. Affected platforms per CPE include rpcbind as shipped with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8, 9, and 10, and Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform 4. The upstream fix is a committed patch in the linux-nfs.org rpcbind git repository (commit bb9bb7286a4c345442946dc2ce3c9e7f67e96d4d).
RemediationAI
The upstream fix is available as commit bb9bb7286a4c345442946dc2ce3c9e7f67e96d4d in the rpcbind git repository at git.linux-nfs.org (https://git.linux-nfs.org/?p=steved/rpcbind.git;a=commitdiff;h=bb9bb7286a4c345442946dc2ce3c9e7f67e96d4d); however, a released and packaged patched version number has not been confirmed from the available data - monitor Red Hat errata via https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-16277 for official RHEL 8, 9, 10, and OpenShift 4 package updates and apply them as released. As a compensating control, restrict use of rpcinfo -l to known, trusted internal rpcbind endpoints and avoid running it against external or untrusted hosts; this limits exposure but does not remediate the underlying flaw and may disrupt legitimate RPC inventory workflows. If rpcinfo is invoked by automated scripts or monitoring tooling, audit those scripts to ensure server endpoints are hardcoded to trusted infrastructure rather than dynamically resolved, reducing the risk of a compromised server triggering the overflow.
