Parse Server is an open source backend that can be deployed to any infrastructure that can run Node.js. Prior to versions 8.6.61 and 9.6.0-alpha.55, an authenticated user calling GET /users/me receives unsanitized auth data, including sensitive credentials such as MFA TOTP secrets and recovery codes. The endpoint internally uses master-level authentication for the session query, and the master context leaks through to the user data, bypassing auth adapter sanitization. An attacker who obtains a user's session token can extract MFA secrets to generate valid TOTP codes indefinitely. This issue has been patched in versions 8.6.61 and 9.6.0-alpha.55.
AnalysisAI
Parse Server versions prior to 8.6.61 and 9.6.0-alpha.55 expose sensitive authentication credentials to authenticated users via the GET /users/me endpoint, including MFA TOTP secrets and recovery codes that should be sanitized. An attacker who obtains a valid user session token can extract these MFA secrets to bypass multi-factor authentication indefinitely and gain unauthorized access to accounts. No CVSS score or EPSS data is currently available, but the vulnerability has confirmed patches available in stable and alpha releases.
Technical ContextAI
Parse Server (cpe:2.3:a:parse-community:parse-server:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) is a Node.js-based open source backend framework that manages user authentication and session handling. The vulnerability is classified under CWE-200 (Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor) and stems from improper data sanitization in the user profile endpoint. The root cause is that the /users/me endpoint performs internal session queries using master-level authentication context, which allows sensitive auth adapter data (TOTP secrets, recovery codes) to leak through to the response without proper sanitization that would normally be applied to user-facing API calls. This represents a context-confusion vulnerability where elevated privilege levels inadvertently expose restricted data.
RemediationAI
Immediately upgrade Parse Server to version 8.6.61 or later (stable) or 9.6.0-alpha.55 or later (alpha track). See the vendor's security advisory at https://github.com/parse-community/parse-server/security/advisories/GHSA-37mj-c2wf-cx96 for detailed upgrade instructions. As interim mitigations prior to patching, restrict network access to Parse Server endpoints to trusted application clients only, implement strict rate limiting on the /users/me endpoint to detect automated credential extraction, monitor session token distribution and invalidate any tokens suspected of compromise, and audit logs for unusual access patterns. The patches are available via commits 5b8998e6866bcf75be7b5bb625e27d23bfaf912c and 875cf10ac979bd60f70e7a0c534e2bc194d6982f.
